jgwalt it's not the idler or alternator. I have a new alternator as of last fall. the water pump is about a year old. I had my girlfriend drive it around a parking lot at my college and i sat on the bumper and listened. The noise is for sure coming from the right tire/wheel area. I checked my brakes last time I did an LOF/ tire rotation and looked fine but maybe they are going? I greased everything about 2k miles ago. maybe I'll pump some more grease in everything and see what that does.

Garyk I'm surprised that the idler lasted this long. These are usually sealed and once they squeal is time for a new one. I would replace the idler as thats the only thing on that side of the engine except the alternator.

jgwalt I ruled out belts or pulleys because the noise isn't heard while sitting still regardless of rpm. Maybe I was wrong to assume this? A couple years ago my idler pulley was making noise so I threw some wheel bearing grease on the inside. Maybe it's that again. I will lube that up again and report back.

oh, and yeah, I have p/s.

Screwjack I think if could still be a belt issue or what Brent in Az suggested. Probably not a wheel bearing, I had one of those go a few months ago and it sounded like the whole jeep was about to come apart at the seems and my steering and breaks went out. You'd know it if it were that.

brent in az First guess would still be a belt or dying pulley/bearings.
Second would be sounds are thrown around a YJ like a frigging ventriloquist...
Third would be power steering lines. I recognize this immediately from another vehicle I have. But I have no p/s in my YJ and I don't know if you do.

I am taking into consideration you being in lower gears and lower speeds when this noise happens. Does not sound like clutch chatter or trans, but when fluid is low in trans or transfer case you usually get high pitched pings..

Hope any of this helps. Not sure why you ruled out belts.

Funky noise coming from my YJ

I have a 94 2.5L with no AC. There is a sound that sounds like someone blew up a balloon and is deflating it with the top pinched, like.. "eeeeeeee". It's also about how loud it is too. I'm pretty sure it's coming from the right front area. It's only audible when going about 5-20 mph, usually 2nd or 3rd gear. It is not heard when idling or when I rev it up while parked. It still makes the noise while coasting in neutral. So, I think tranny and engine/belts are out. My brakes are fine and stop well like they should...

So, anyone have ideas? wheel bearing maybe? I would be quick to diagnose it as a wheel bearing but the noise does not sound like a metallic or grinding noise at all really.
