I think my best *all around* set up with my 2.5L so far was with 33"s and 4.88 gears. There is no comparison on the road, the 33s handled a little better and braking was better. I could cruise down to ~35mph, or up the freeway in 5th gear and even up slight inclines in 5th. Gas mileage was in the upper teens. Off road the crawl ratio was good (for my area: tight, twisting in the trees with snow or mud most of the year, rocks will still make t-case gears nicer) and my Jeep went pretty well.
When I went to 35s, I also went with bead locks, a 4:1, and NV3550 trans (which has a slightly higher 5th gear....which works against the 4 cyl.) so I do not have a perfect apples to apples comparison. However while off road the 35" are great and the little more clearance and ability to roll over things is great, I was pretty surpised how much the on-road characteristics suffered. The braking was noticably weaker, but it is like a vacuum came and sucked the power out of the engine. 5th gear is only usable on perfectly flat or down hill road and I need to be going at least 55-60 mph to shift into that gear. Gas mileage is in the lower teens. Where I live, there are a lot of hills, which require me to shift into 3rd on the freeway. Also, I am in 3rd or 4th on level ground if there is a headwind.
Just my experience, FWIW. Depending on how much you drive your Jeep on the street or how much of a lack of power bothers you is only up to you. I drive my Jeep a lot, even dd if my other car is broken, but I think if my Jeep were my only vehicle I would go back to 33s and just have a little more challenge/pull winch cable a little more while off road.
As for your question about swapping in a 4.0L, while I have not done this, I do know that you will need (besides the engine): appropriate auto or manual transmission (and clutch, bellhousing, etc.), computer, motor mounts, 23 spline input shaft on the NP231 t-case, and all the misc. things such as radiator hoses.
So it all comes down to how much you want to pay for the 35's. Welcome to the slippery $lope of Jeepin!

|Jerry Bransford||I wouldn't run anything bigger than 35" on the axles that any of our Wranglers come with and I'd only run 35" if my rear axle was a Dana 44 or stronger. Unless you swapped your YJ's rear Dana 35c for something stronger like a Dana 44 or Ford 8.8, I wouldn't even run larger than 33".|

I was told with my I6 that I could push up to 36's without any trouble. On a 4" lift that is... But they did say, If I had the 4 cylinder I would'nt want to run anything higher than 33's. It was because of the I6 that I could go that high as/is.
If you try it anyways and she's not liking 'em, you'll know becuase it will bog down on ya. Like a stick shift when you hit a higher gear to soon...

I've got the same situation
Currently, I have a 4 inch lift with a 2 inch body lift on 33's and it runs just fine. As long as you are not wanting to go on the interstate and push 65-70 you will be fine. I use the jeep mainly for hunting and going back and forth to work on nice days and have never had any complaints. I did order 35 BF Goodrich AT's so I'll have to let you know if I made a mistake when I get them installed.

I hate to say this as I know you're excited about having bought new 35" tires but I would definitely run nothing bigger than 33" on your Wrangler SE.
There are two reasons why: 1) Your SE's rear axle is a Dana 35c and in stock form, it is simply not strong enough for 35" tires. No kidding, no exaggeration. You can upgrade it with a Superior Axle Super 35 or C-Clip eliminator kit but you're talking big $$$ there. 2) Your 2.5L doesn't really put out enough power to turn 35" tires. Yes you can regear your axles to 4.88 but for the 2.5L engine, 4.88 is needed just to run 33" tires. And you you can't regear any lower than 4.88 without replacing your front Dana 30 with a different axle. I really (!) would not try to run 35" tires on your Wrangler SE.

|kellyjo29||Added a 4 inch lift and 33" tires last spring and have sure noticed a difference- saving up for a different rear end and re - negotiating those gears. I no longer use 5th speed at all.|

Hopefully your not heavy on the gas peddle or not doing anything to serious with 35" tires and the D35 axles. They run fine if you know how to wheel them.
You'll definately need to re-gear for those 35's.
Along with your lift... there's a trickle effect..
Hopefully you bought a lift kit with Adj. control arms front & rear to dial in the pinion angle and also if you have not already, you might want to get a 1" MML (Motor Mount Lift) to help the drivetrain, and help eliminate some of the vibes.
Most likely, you'll need or it's best to get a SYE and a rear CV driveshaft.

|adkjoe||No need for a new engine. If you are going to do any serious wheeling you will want atleast dana 44's and I would gear up to maybe 4:88. It's all about gearing my friend. The 4 banger can push those tires easily with the right axles and gearing.|

|yjkid95||You dont need to swap the motor what you do need to do is upgrade your axles and get the gearing correct for that tire size and the amount of power your engine puts out|

four banger =(!! help!!!
ok i have a 97 tj with a four banger!!! i juct purchased a 4" lift and 35" tires!! i curently have a 2" body lift and 33" and she runs fine!!! but i am sacerd thet with the new lift ad tires i wont have enough power to do anything!!! should i swap with a 6cyl or will i be fine?? and if i swap with a 6cyl is it just bolt in or to i need to chang a lot more than the moter mounts??
