4Jeepn As stated, it is an older Jeep, so expect to fix a few things. As for the axle.. do you need a whole complete axle end to end, or just a shaft? What is wrong with it? I would start with the safety items first.. brakes etc.. then work down the list. I have replaced complete brake lines on Jeeps before.. its not too bad just takes some time.

I just don't see the problem..... I have found this reason to be most effective.

Need to remember you're driving a 20 yr old vehicle that most likely has been to hell and back with very little maintenance depending on the previous owner's abilities.

LoneWolfUSMC I feel your pain.

We just bought a '90 YJ and while she looks great on the outside, she has her issues. A simple brake job turned into replacing the entire rear brake system. This also revealed that the axle seals are leaking. I am pretty sure the steering box need to be replaced and the front end is leaking from an undetermined location. Did I mention the transmission has the standard fifth gear problem?

There are also several botched electrical hacks that I need to restore to original condition, but thankfully I have a garage, light, heat and air tools.

Now the Jeep is a new reason to buy new tools.

Oh, well I love it, so I will get it anything it needs... The previous owner seems to be a little negligent to her basic needs, and so caused a whole heap of problems... but now I am picking up the slack and bringing her back to life little by little!

scott howard welcome to the jeep thing. just never ever call it a car again!!!!!
owning a jeep will make you a mechanic in no time but learning how to work on it is part of the jeep fun.
change the gear lube in the trans and replace it with royal purple synthetic 80-90w and replace the clutch master cylinder and flush all the old fluid out and put in some fresh dot 3 fluid.
doing both of these will be your best hope of a smooth shifting trans with out rebuilding it.
rebuilding the rear axle will be your chance to regear and put in a locker....see how when something breaks it can lead to good stuff....lol

Garyk New brakes on a 91 is not a surprise, especially of the PO was not very good at keeping up on maintenance. The grinding of 3rd could be a bad clutch, bad synchro, shifter needs adjustment or low fluid. Take the boot off and see if the shifter is adjusted properly, Put some synthetic in the trans too.

Thuone All older Jeeps tend to have things like this yes hell so do the newer ones.lol. Just read my signature. But start replacing stuff as needed take the time to learn how to work on it yourself it will save you tons of cash.

Sounds like you are replacing the whole brake system so I don’t know of anything else that would be affected. ??

Shifting problem is beyond me since its only one gear you’re having trouble with. Does it grind when you put it into 3rd if you’re sitting still in a parking lot? Check your master clutch cylinder see if your fluid level is ok.

Kate You'll prolly have some bugs to work out.

Just be patient, and kind. Remember that there IS a reason why the previous owner sold it. It's possible that you may have found that reason.

Older vehicles do require a bit more maintenance than the newer ones. Sounds like the previous owner wasn't as good at maintenance as he should have been. You will probably find more problems as you go down the road. This is the nature of JEEP, not just yours in particular. It never hurts to have a few hundred dollars stuffed away for a rainy day though.

I'm curious, why did the mechanic recommend that you replace the rear axle? Is it bent, or damaged in some way?

OMJ!: Oh My Jeep.... ugh

ok, so I just got my 91 YJ Renegade at the beginning of the month and..... although I absolutely LOVE IT! well, I got some problems!

Was driving last week and the brakes locked up on me. So, took it to my grandfather's work place because he works for a guy who builds race cars and he does a lot of side work. So, the guy had just got to my Jeep today and started taking it apart and found.....

Needs new front and back brakes, the brake lines are rusted out, the rear axle needs replaced (not right away, but it is recommended sooner rather than later), and the master brake cylinder needs replaced...

I just wanted to know that, since we found all these problems, is this common for old jeeps? (this is my first car ever so please be kind)

Also, with these problems, is it likely to find any other problems that go along with this?

and another thing, unrelated to the brakes and stuff, while I am driving, no matter what I do, the gears ALWAYS grind going into and out of 3rd gear! I have tried double shifting, doesnt help. However, I have learned that if you put it in neutral first (holding the clutch in the whole time), and wiggle the shifter a little, it goes right into 3rd with no problem.

So tell me what you think. Is this a simple gear synchronizer problem, or is it a complete tranny rebuild or replacement?
