Best homemade Hi-lift jack hood mount!

I USE my jeep! We rock crawl and trail ride almost every week. I wanted a tough hi-lift mount that was out of the way, out of the danger zone (bumpers), and outside the tub [wouldnt want that thing coming loose in a roll-over situation].

I made my jack mount out of a few tiny pieces of scrap 1/8" steel flat stock I had on hand, the rubber spare tire bumpers on your back gate, and $8 worth of hardware from home depot.

Notice it is low-profile. It can be seen from the drivers seat, but doesnt enter fear with your line of sight. Also it is in a posisition where the hood can still lay back against the windshield frame without the jack touching the glass or the jack base hitting my drivers side spot light.

Here is the parts that you will need:
  • 1 - 10" piece of 3/8 all thread (to be cut into 2 - 5" pieces)
  • 4 - 3/8 nuts
  • 2 - 3/8 lock washers
  • 2 - 3/8 wing nuts
  • 2 - 3/8 fender washers
  • 2 - 5/16 x 1 carrage bolts
  • 2 - 5/16 nuts
  • 2 - 5/16 lock washers
  • your rubber spare tire bumpers
  • 2 - 1/8 x 2 x approx 5 flat steel stock (or scrap pieces of metal)
  • 1 - 1/8 x approx 1 x approx 5 flat stock steel scrap
  • 2 - auto vacuum caps
  • 1 - padlock

Here is the drivers side photo.

You will have to take a small pick or screwdriver and remove the metal washers that are recessed inside of the spare tire bumpers for them to fit over the all thread. The 3/8 nut will recess inside the [bottom] rubber bumpers with minimal force.

Here is the passenger side photo - notice the lock plate.

Take your 1" flat stock and scribe a line down the center (long ways) to center the hole to be drilled so a lock shank will fit through it. Then start taking metal off each edge with a bench grinder until it will pass through a hole in the hi-lift. Once done figure your carriage bolt hole and make the bend with a vice, keeping it on your flat stock under the hood [pictured below].

Assemble everything in this order (starting under the hood and working your way up) on each piece of the all thread: NUT - LOCK WASHER - UNDER HOOD SUPPORT METAL - JEEP HOOD - RUBBER TIRE BUMPER - NUT - JACK - RUBBER TIRE BUMPER - FENDER WASHER - WING NUT - VACUUM CAP (TO HELP PROTECT THE THREADS)

If you wanted to spend about 4 times the money you could build it all out of stainless if you wanted. Took me about 2 hours starting from scratch to throw this thing together. Hope you like and Enjoy!
