Unlimited You flat tow a Jeep with the transfer case in neutral, the drive shafts spin but not the transmission. The speedo is connected to the transmission, so no logged miles.

Look on the front bumper and frame for signs of a tow bar mount. Also take a philips driver with you and check the rear light housings for an extra bulb. Or, just take a few minutes and trace the wires that are hanging.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with it being a tow vehicle. You just won't know how many miles are in the TX case, diffs, bearings, seals, etc....

Bluecjboy I have no idea if it really is a tow vehicle, it is just a quess. I still haven't talked to the sales people but I'm not sure how towing it behind a RV would not show up on the odometer. would you have to disconnect the speedo cable?

Unlimited Keep in mind that if it was a tow vehicle, it might have a lot more miles on the running gear that the odometer shows. A friend bought a 97 TJ that had 105k miles on it. The owner told him that it only had 45k miles on the motor and 60k tow miles. He took it into his mechanic who told him that Jeeps don't log tow miles on the odometer. So the actual mileage was 105k plus whatever tow miles the previous owner put on it.

I log the tow miles on my Jeep, but not everyone does. I doubt that most people would not be willing to share that information if they had it.

Bluecjboy Thanks for the clarification I found a Thread on the YJ mileage but was getting that one confused with the the boxy ZJ. I don't know much beyond the world of CJ's. Maybe jeep should looking into better model designation for all of us newbs

1BLKJP Howdy, If you are looking at a 93 then you would be looking at the YJ model designation. TJ's were made from 97-06.

Those little 4bangers can and will go into the several hundred thousand mile category. The one thing our Wrangler engines are good for is longevity. Seeing as you are out here in AZ I'm sure the body is in fine shape and if the pinion seals are the only things that are leaking I'd say that you've found a good one (just by what you've said. I'd still want to drive it first obviously. )

TJ mileage question

I'm a newbie to the forum but I had my '77 CJ-7 for about 8 years now. My question is related to a 1993 TJ that is sitting on a jeep dealership lot around to corner. It has the little 4 banger in it with 165K mi, and I have no idea how long these little buggers last. I crawled under it last night after the dealership closed and there is no signs of rust and only a little sign of leakage around pinion shaft front and rear. I looks like it has been take well care of and I think it might have been a tow vehicle judging by the mileage and two wires coming out between the left headlight and the grille. The reason I'm looking into it is the engine in my car is knocking and I need replace it before it goes out.
