oh snap! I had that problem on my I6...
I used the engine to seat the belt. Even with all the tension off, I could not get it over the lip. Tried and tried like hell... Then I put it on as far as I could and bumped the engine over (with coil wire off so it would not start). Of course, I had it the wrong way and the belt popped off when I bumped it. I then fed it starting the opposite way, bumped the engine over and whalla! It was on all the way
(note, I did have the tensioner backed all the way. The last bolt is tricky to find. Its like five bolts you have to loosen to get it to move.)

|JDGROVER||i had the same problem i couldnt get the tensioner to move then i finnally found the last bolt. it was on the back of the pump the side facing the fire wall. it was easier to loosen from under the jeep.|

|Garyk||Don't have a picture but......facing the pump from front bumper there is a bolt on the top of bracket (loosen) there is another at the rear of the pump (bolt is facing firewall)(loosen) there is a third nut that needs to be loosened that locks the tensioner adjustment bolt. This is located directly below the PS pulley in front(actually can't see it but can feel it). Even with this a new belt will be tight|

|Slik2010||Does anybody have pictures of the bolts that are supposed to be loosen for the belt tensioner???....I'm having sort of the same problem and i believe I got the right bolts but the damn thing just won't move and it's really starting to piss me off some hahaha|

|WhiteWillSmiff||I used a large screwdriver as kind of a shoe horn to slip it over the fan pulley. Make sure the PS pump is completely loose.|

|Tate07||I agree.. I just replaced the belt and water pump on mine and just make sure you loosen those bolts on the power steering pump . Those are the tension adjustment bolts and best I can remember there is one on the bottom backside of that bracket.|

I put a new serpentine belt on my 95 2.5L a couple of months ago as well... it was a bitch of a time.
Finally figured out that the adjustment screw on the right needs to be turned in the OPPOSITE direction you would expect (On the alternator mount I think, could be wrong). Weird, but effective.

|jeepjones||Are you reusing the old pulley or did the water pump come with a new one? If it came with a new one make sure it is the same size as the old one or if you are installing a new belt remember it won't be stretched out like the old one which means you will have to readjust the tensioner pulley. Make sure also that the belt isn't getting hung up on the side of the crank pulley or anything else.|

I did the same thing last month
try changing what side of the belt you are starting with and work your way around the diagram. I found that if i started on the right side near the ps pump it was easier than starting over by the alternator. Don't know why but it worked for me.

|dsierra5||I have the correct belt and am follwing the routing diagram on the fan shroud. Any suggestions will help to keep me from flipping out. I did all this work to replace the water pump and would hate to have to pay someone more than usual for simply coming out to put on my belt. Thanks.|

95 2.5L 4cyl Can't Get Serpentine Belt Back On!
I just changed the water pump on my 95 2.5L and now I can't get the serpentine belt back on. My Jeep uses the PS pump as the tensioner. I loosened both bolts on back and on front and adjusted the tensioner screw that screws out toward the driver side fender. Even when I pull the PS pump assemply all the way forward, I still can not slip the belt on. What am I doing wrong or is there another adjustment I need to make? The alternator does not have an adjuster and is simply bolted on with two bolts. Thanks for any help you can lend.
