|Wallygator||Had the same thing happen with my tj. Turned out to be the tranny mount. Cheap fix and not too difficult|

|lancetkenyon||Let us know what you find. A conclusion to a problem thread is always good to read.|

I think you hit it Lance. I crawled back under today with a flashlight and there seems to be nothing loose or missing, the oly thing i could think of is if the rubber ripped, as you said.
I guess if I put a jack under it and gently lift the tranny I should be able to see if the rubber is ripped. thanks for your advise!

|lancetkenyon||^ This. Also, the stock rubber tranny mount could have ripped. I had that happen once. Double check all your motor mount bolts too, both into the mount to frame, and the mount to block. It is pretty common to break a motor mount at the block. I sheared a bolt, and broke out a piece of the block housing around another bolt. Then the third bolt fell out(or any other combo of failure) and I was left with a floppy motor.|

|NHrubicon||I don't know about the LJ but on my TJ there shouldn't be any play-the transfer case is bolted to the crossmember (called non-affectionately the 'shovel') an this connection should be tight and snug-nothing should be moving. If your driveshaft only is moving, then you need new universals-if the end of the transfercase is moving, bearing...but if the whole thing is moving you have either missing bolts or loose bolts! Look for 'holes' in the bottom of the crossmember and see if there is a corresponding hole in the bottom of the transfer case...if so, bet there is supposed to be a bolt in there!|

is this bad?
I've noticed a but of a thumping noise from under my LJ lately, not bad or often, but it's there.
I crawled under and started grabbing stuff and trying to find anything that was loose.
I noticed that if i grab the end of the rear drive shaft up by the transfer case and try to wiggle it, the whole transfer case and tranny can move up and down a bit. Is there supposed to be play in it? I looked to see if there were some sort of mounting brackets broken but I couldn't see any. The engine brackets are fine.
Any thoughts anyone?
