leeejone Thanks guys. I didn't think we had a two-way radio business in Louisville. A friend in the military proved me wrong and gave me their number.

jeepjones The type of antenna that you are thinking about is actually made of stainless steel and can be found as the poster above mentioned at most CB Radio shops. The 4x4 store probably won't be able to help much other than maybe steer you in the right direction or maybe rape your wallet. Those types of antennas are actually quite expensive so don't be shocked at the price.

leeejone I'm in the same boat.

I like the looks of those long whip antennas that are tied down to form an arc across the jeep.

A question for the more informed (since I know very little about this topic):
I plan on mounting mine to the stock tire bumper thing on the back passenger side of my YJ... if I do will an 8 (or so) foot antenna do the job and arc to the front of the jeep on its own if tied down at the tip... or will I end up needing one of those spring thingies at the base of the antenna? Will that even work practically or will the antenna end up rubbing my soft top and I need to re-locate it to the side with another mount to prevent the rub?
Also, where can I find a long enough antenna? Anywhere online that anyone knows of? I plan on stopping by the only offroad place here in Louisville (KY) but they don't always run the cheapest prices.

"military grade" is in industry classification regarding to parameters outlined by classification of their materials and testing.

Surplus stores can help you find one that looks neat and are in specs, however since everyone is out to make money in the retail business, most antennas are made to meet or surpass military standards, and to be quite honest, most practical mil spec equipment is lower then what you would assume as top grade.

I had to throw my 2 cents in as well as agree with the previous posts. Just also being informative. No downshooting here

sparky I gotta agree, they look neat, but they do whip around. Since they screw onto the mount, you could get a short fiberglass one for trail use and switch them out when you want.

UABYJ94 I would be leary about running the long whip antenna do to most OHV parks have outlawed them do to the whip action causing injuries.. If you are strictly wanting it for looks in mall parking lots and on the road then I would suggest securing the tip ,like most military vehicles, to the front bumper or such to keep it front hurting someone..

sparky There are no military grade CB antenna's.
Are you looking for a "military look" style of antenna? Maybe a long stainless whip on top of a big spring.
