Jerry Bransford You are correct on that, I forgot that I had added a ground strap between the tailgate and tub. Thanks for bringing that fact up because an antenna mount that doesn't have an adequate RF ground won't allow the antenna to work up to its full potential plus it will be difficult to tune for a good low SWR.

How did you ensure a good ground from the spare tire mount to the tailgate to the tub?

From what I have read there isn't a good connection through the tailgate hinge. I have thought that if I add a ground strap from the tailgate to the tub that what sort out the problem.

Jerry Bransford That's a pretty cool idea but it sure looks like the antenna may be placed a little too close to the plastic tail light to make me happy.

biffman Jerry...how about the license plate mounted antenna with a 4' Firestik..I think CoolTech sells one for the JK. I suppose though that you'll run into the same issues with the antenna mounted that low as you would with it mounted to the bumper.

Jerry Bransford No, you can't cut the antenna to make it shorter. Well you COULD cut it but it wouldn't work well afterwards. I would go with nothing taller than a 3' tall antenna if you go with the spare tire bracket mount location, a 2' antenna would work fine too. I run a 2' Firestick FS-2 antenna and it gets out on the trail just fine, as well as any other antenna.

I wonder if having it so low is why I always got terrible reception before. I have a really long antenna now that probably 6' or so (flaps around like crazy on the highway). I thought about mounting it to the spare tire carrier but didn't thinking that I would need to have a lot of slack wire hanging in the back to allow the door to swing open. I could probably run the wire through thr 3rd brake light hole.

I have plastic corner guards (terrible, I know) so I don't think I'd be able to mount it there like picture 2-though I really like that location. I'll play with it tonight and see if I can get the spare mount to work. If so, it'd be a really high antenna for sure. I suppose I shouldn't cut it down to size if I raise it, right?

Jerry Bransford First, a shackle (D-ring) is a closed recovery point so there is no chance a tow strap inserted into it could pop out. And there is far less of a chance any other type of recovery cable, etc. would pop out of a closed shackle when compared to an open hook. They are preferrable to an open hook.

So far as the antenna mount goes, I am a 2-way radio guy and except for the 102" whip antennas which I never recommend for trail use, I never recommend bumper antenna mounts. Bumper mounted antennas have to be extra tall, like 5' or so, to clear the tub and the fact that such a high percentage of their overall length is next to the steel tub which detunes them is not a good thing.

I prefer a higher mounting location, like on top of the spare tire bracket as seen below, or perhaps a tail light mount like you can find on TeraFlex • Jeep Suspensions, Body Protection, Low Range Gearing and HD Axles. A 2' or 3' antenna mounted at that height avoids being next to the tub and it will just work better than a longer antenna mounted onto the bumper.

The first pic shows how I used to have my antenna mounted behind the spare tire and it worked very well there. I only moved it after I got rid of the factory spare tire mount.

The second mount is about where the Tera tail light mount would place it, and Tera makes a version for both the driver's and passenger's side tail lights. Just make sure if you go with Tera's mount to grind away the powder coating and paint between the mount and tub so the mount is adequately grounded. And grind a little ring of powder coating away from underneath Tera's mount where the antenna mount's lock washer and nut are so that part of the mount is grounded too. Leave the top of the mount alone, it needs the powder coating on top.

The one in the second pic below isn't a Tera mount, I welded a tab onto my spare tire carrier bracket for mine. I just showed it because that's a good location for a CB antenna.

CB Antenna mount for Warn bumper?

With my stock bumper I had a basic two screw antenna mount that went right into the back of the rear bumper. Now that I installed the Warn bumper (below) I'm struggling with where to mount it.



My version doesn't have the W cutouts, but mounting it on one of the edges would hit against the tail lights. I have holes on the top I thought about dropping the antenna it to, but then i wouldn't be able to open the tailgate. I could drill into the bumper like the stock one, though I'd rather keep it clean. I run a hard top for the winter so I cant mount it inside the tailgate. Any ideas?

And to sidetrack my own post, Warn sells a shackle to mount into the receiver. I've searched but haven't found a clear answer. What the heck does a shackle do and is it worth the near 40 bucks to what seems to be just a loop? If it's just a tow point, wouldn't a hook do the same thing?

As always thanks for the help. I'm learning more with each post.
