|maureenwlkr||I have a 2008 JK. I was adding 1-2 quarts every other fill up. It just kept getting worse. After taking it to 2 dealerships with no positive results it started losing power. I took it to a 3rd dealer and finally found a service manager that was willing to figure out what was going on. Turned out there was a defective bearing and they replaced the engine. Powertrain warranty covered the total cost. But it was based on my having all the oil change receipts to show that I had properly maintained the engine. The new engine runs perfect with no oil usage. BTW no one works on my JK but that dealership!|

Which Yahoo dealer did you go to, there are so many to choose from down here!!
The only decent dealer I found was the one I bought my JK from, and they went out of business last year.

|jk'n||OK, what the manual says and what the dealer has set your change oil message to may be two different things. If they set it to 3000 miles which is what they usually do, then the light will come on 500 miles before the setting (2500 miles traveled) unless the algorithm that is used by the computer causes it to trip early (such may be the case if in 4 low a lot). I was aware of the trip setting and have instructed my dealer to set it to trip at 6000. The change oil message has come on so far every time I reach 5500 from the mileage that the oil was last changed. This has been consistent now through 40,000 miles of travel. It has not once tripped early with one exception. While I was on vacation in Florida, the yahoo dealer down there changed the trip point to 3000 miles on me and it tripped right at 2500. I reset it and will bring it in right at 6,000 as I have since the beginning. Regarding my oil usage, this is the first vehicle that I have owned that used more than a quart between changes. I'm not a happy camper about that but not sure what can be done about it. When the engine fails, it has the lifetime drive train warranty...I guess they replace it then. In the mean time I get to add a quart every 2 to 3,000 miles.|

so the dealer didn't put enough oil in it?
NO healthy engine should use 3 quarts between changes. or even 1 quart for that matter.

|boitnottr||No, oil change light comes on I change the oil. Every time. It just realized that it was 3 qts. low after the trip to the dealership. I have not seen a low oil pressure light. Owners manuel says to change oil at 6000 miles. Dealership says when the light comes on. Hince every 2500 miles. I live in Louisiana and also use 5w 20 oil. Is this maybe to thin for my area?|

The oil change indicator light was on, not the low oil light. At least, that's what I got out of it.

Man, something is really wrong here!!
Oil has to be changed every fixed milage based on it's rating and type. Usually a small quantity of the oil is used up like half a liter os so.
But if you have the oil alarm on that means you lost 3 liters already!
Which means one of two things:
1- you have an oil leakage some where, check the bottom of your car to see if there is leakage at the bottom of the engine, or if there is oil traces at the place where u park ur car at night. If so then it is a simple issue, may be u will need to replace an oil seal or so.
2- there is a major problem with ur engine, and some work will need to be done with internal oils seals and cylinder heads, or have the engine replaced if it is in warranty.
Don't be so soft on this one, oil leakage is the most serious issue.

|daggo66||Based on what you wrote, the dealer changed the oil once at 2500 miles. Then you changed it a 2nd time about 33,000 miles later, then a third time "shortly after" and you're wondering why it's using oil? Are you checking the oil? Are you letting it go down 3 quarts without replacing any? Unless you've left out some facts, this is a case of owner negligence.|

Wow, that is a lot of oil usage. I thought I was using a lot at 1 qt per 2000 miles traveled. When you said that the oil light came on did you mean the change oil message or the actual oil light that indicates loss of oil pressure? If it is the latter, then you are waiting way too long to check the oil in between oil changes. My latest oil change done by a dealer in Florida on vacation I actually went 3000 miles before I had to add a quart. I'm hoping that the longer interval means that my rings are wearing in better or something good like that has happened. I have a sample from the last change and keep meaning to send it in to be analyzed. I'll probably post back on the results in this forum.
Give some more details about what light you are referring to.

08 Jeep using oil
I have an 08 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X I bought new. When the oil light came on the first time, approx. 2500 miles, I took it to the dealership and they changed the oil and said the light on the dash will tell me when to change the oil. Before the warranty was up I changed the oil and brought it in and had work done on it. Shortly after the oil light came on again. I changed the oil, noticed only 3 quarts came out and set the trip meter to see how many miles are on an oil change. Approx. 2414 miles and it seems to be using about 3 qts of oil per change. Help.
