|Nano||I bought my 03 Sport in 05 (2 years old) with 11k miles for 13k. That is quite a bit less than 25-35k for a Rubicon. I've been able to Customize my Sport the way I want and doing it at a pace has kept me interested. It may still not be up to a Rubicon's 'standard', but it's been able to handle the amount and type of offroading that I've done and wanted.|

In '03 when I was going to buy a new TJ, I looked at the Rubi vs the others.
I priced out what it would take to add the things the Rubi had, '44's, lockers, xfr case, brakes, etc - all that stuff came to about 5k (parts) more than the Rubi - IF I DID ALL THE WORK MYSELF.
I bought the Rubi - still it took more than 7k (parts) more to modify it to where it is today, tires, suspension, skids, etc. AND I BUILT IT ALL MYSELF TOO.
But it's not for everyone.
He He - I talked to the owner of the dealership - he was amazed that I take it off road. He said most people just buy it for the status.
Ha Ha -- This thread reminds me of a guy I knew that claimed his Pontiac sedan would "go places Jeeps were afraid to go!" Last I head he's a Congressman - it figures!

What bugs me most about this whole Rubicon vs Sport thing is that a lot of people will buy the Rubicon hearing its better not realizing that the "better" part refers to off road preparedness. The few Rubicon owners ive talked to around me said they never take their rigs off road and when i questioned why they didnt just save money and buy a sport one replied "the sports are junk, the Rubicons are built better than the sports" some people just dont buy what they need, instead often buy more than they need without even knowing it. That said, if your going to lift your jeep, run larger tires, and id say wheel it more than 1 time a year the Rubicon is a good choice for the extra money. If your just going to drive around town most of the time and not run larger than 33's why not save the money and get a sport and still be able to wheel better than most vehicles when you want to.
ugh i think im ranting it just bothers me when i see people who have Rubicons or for that matter any vehicle that they never use for its intended purpose. RANT: on [off]

|tailhole||Most the rubicons around here never see a gravel road. Kind of like having a chevy 4x4, got to have the Z71, I was thinking the same 6 months ago when i bought a jeep.(rubi?sport?X?) Than started thinking about specific to the rubicon and what it would take to find parts and fix when it broke. I also didn't really care for 4to1 case(to low for my use). And i love buying and up grading stuff my way|

|Rubicondon53||Here's our Rubi, basically stock form cept for bolt on doodads, & lifted just enough to stuff the aforementioned 255/85/16s. If you have the dough these TJs are the way too go. Stockers used can be found for around 15k...|

I bought my Rubicon used, it wasnt "overpriced". If your buying a new jeep if you can afford a Rubi then go that way because yes you can build a better jeep but not until the warranty runs out unless you dont care to void it. As far as a lift goes its all in what you want if you just want the look or for off roading. And yes there are advantages to a lift, mainly the advantages are from the ability to run bigger tires, because as anyone with any sense knows the only way to gain ground clearance is with taller tires not just by lifting a vehicle. With good suspension parts you will also have a better working suspension. But yes larger tires do come with more strain on the vehicle. There are also other ways of running bigger tires, than just a huge lift.

These are just some off the main options that come with the Rubicon package im not saying they are better than anything else but they do come with some nice parts, especially if you dont want to get into serious mods. right out of the gate.They are very capable in stock form. I read those options right off of my original window sticker, just trying to help.

Yeah, Pokey and I will have to agree to disagree. The trails I hit are pretty much impossible without 35's or bigger.
The Rubi is a very capable rig. If you are looking to get out there and aren't planning on doing severe upgrades, Rubi is your best bet. If you are planning on just mall crawling and likely will never use 4WD, save some cash and get a Sport.
Personally, I opted on getting the lower end X because I knew I'd be replacing just about everything that the Rubi offered. No need to spend extra $ if you are just going to be replacing it in the long run.

Hi there, I'm not going to hammer you, as I somewhat agree, my " rule if thumb" has always been,, " if it voids the warranty, don't do it!! The engineers at jeep are world class & I respect their opinions. I run 285/55/16's, with 1.75" spring lift & a 1" body lift, well within warranty specs.

I have a 98 sport and my friend has a rubi.......I cant follow him anywheres.....sport is a rubicant
but comparing a sport to a rubi is like comparing apples to oranges
apples to apples my sport with street tires can go a long way in 2wd where most 4wd trucks get stuck.
Balance and driving make a diffrence.
I love my sport and see no need for a $35,000 rubi i'll be affraid to scratch

|01WranglerGuy||As for the vibration did you check the ball joints, putting mine in shop this week, its doing the same thing but it gets worse as you accel. its the same when drive'n 20 or 50 but when you coast it seems to go away, im getting tired of play'n the guess'n game this is getting expensive.|

The rubicon had WAY better stuff for offroading. If you tried to upgrade a sport to a rubicon you would pay well over $5000, if not $7000+.

|Apshouse||Well when I purchased the jeep it was already lifted 4" with 32" tires and a 1" t-case drop and a nasty vibration on take off. I really like the looks of the lift and big tires, as far as off roading I would love to do alot more than I do, I guess the problem really is that I dont want to do the work myself to install the sye and cv shaft because a lack of experiance. So if anyone lives around western ky that would enjoy doing the work for me I will pay.....|

Honestly I agree with what pokey said, and this is coming from a guy with a 6" lift, one tons, and 41's. But I also have a 48 CJ2A on 32's and it is a lot of fun and much more challenging to wheel with. I have to travel very far to get the same technical challenge in the big Jeep, v/s local trails in the Willys.
IMO the Rubi option pkg. is way over priced. You can start with a sport and build a better Jeep for less money. Having said that it is the most off road capable stock Jeep, so far.
You must buy a new CV style driveshaft when installing an SYE, the stock shaft will not bolt up. The Rubi already has a "SYE style" output shaft and CV driveshaft.

I should add a disclaimer here for you hardcore guys who run pretty insane trails, but I don't think most of us here have the money to properly modify and then thrash our daily drivers on those trails. This post is aimed at the guys with daily drivers who are thinking of doing a lift.
I've had this debate here before and many knowledgeable jeepers explained to me why in certain situations, a lift is going to give you that advantage that will make the difference between getting from point A to point B or not, and I agree.
So, I guess my point with this post is " know what you are doing"...lifting the Jeep and driving it offroad. Everything you need to know about lifts is right here on this forum. Knowing how to drive it offroad only comes with experience. Don't think you can go out and buy a Rubicon and it will take you anywhere you want to go offroad if you've never been offroad. Most people seem to want a lifted Jeep because it looks nice. But I'm here to tell you a stock jeep is more than capable. Do your homework here before you lift.

|Bad Co.||I had the same issue when I lifted my wrangler. The two quickest fixes that I know of are to drop the transfer case or put in a slip yoke eliminator kit. If you go the route of the slip yoke eliminator kit then you will probably have to replace the rear drive shaft with one that is a cv style drive shaft... That is what I am doing. Hope this helps...|

|pokey||A Sport is very capable offroad. The Rubicon is more of a hard-core four wheeler. Having said that, it's not so much the model as it is the driver.|

|Hendy||It depends on what your intend to do with it? A Sport is cheaper and you can build it up yourself. A Rubi is a much more capable offroad vehicle but if you don't use it for that purpose then you are wasting your money.|
