Ima leaning towards a wireing or ignition switch issue.

dgsinclair YES. Turn the key all gauges come on. Turn all the way over to start, No click or anything and no start. Leave key on, unplug wire from relay and touch bolt terminal on relay, it turns over and starts up. Whatever contact is being touched when I turn the key all the way over to turn the starter, seems to be the issue.

Sounds like it could have a wiring/ignition switch issue. You can test the ig switch with a meter.

Is your symptoms "turn the key and nothing"? But you can jump that wire and have it start? If you turn the key and it "clicks" then you have a connection/bad relay issue.

starter relay

when i installed my new starter relay i was told not to overtighten the nuts because it will turn them on the inside of the relay...

have you been able to start the jeep before? anything out of the ordinary before the problem started?

1988 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4.2L (258)

I have a similar problem, except I can unplug wire coming from key and touch it to post on relay and it cranks right up. Change starter relay. Same problem. Recently clean up cables and replace ignition switch. Any other suggestions?

flipflop just saw i never made it back to this thread.

I fixed the issue just replacing the battery cables and terminals all together like you said. Have had no problems since.

If anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated Thanks
K so anytime i hear stuff like this my first thought is corrosion in the battery cables. Do this quick 5 min check and it may end up solving your problem.

A very common issue with starting is corrosion in between the battery cables and the battery posts. When this is an issue what you will experience when attempting to start is an audible click and maybe failure of the electrical system immediately afterwards. If this sounds like you the first step is to get a battery corrosion cleaning kit from napa, autozone, etc. (about $10). Next disconnect the battery cables from your car (remember neutral first THEN positive), visually inspect the inside of the battery cables, the cables themselves and the battery posts. What you are looking for inside the battery cable connectors is a dull metallic grey film, if you see that you have corrosion and it needs to be cleaned. What you should actually see is clean shiny metal. If you see corrosion use the metal brushes from your cleaning kit and the corrosion cleaning spray and thoroughly clean the connectors and battery posts. Apply anti corrosion spray after cleaning and the anti corrosion felt rings if your kit comes with them. Make sure you reconnect the battery cables positive first then neutral (reverse from when you disconnected them).

Now this will solve your corrosion problem temporarily, you will have to replace the battery cables to make sure you no longer have corrosion issues. You are also going to want to clean any surface the battery cables touch as well.

Thanks for the reply! I have replaced the battery, batt terminals and starter solenoid and motor within the past 2 months. i took them both off and had them checked out and both are doing great. i just replaced the starter relay. it was in pretty rough shape. jeep started right up. went to start it about a hour later and it wouldnt start again. HM. no idea. I Am going to try replacing the battery/starter cables now..... :-/

kik Welcome to the forum. On your straight 6 4.2 it could be as simple as a bad ground, due to the cable, or your battery could be bad. If you're not sure how old the battery is I would replace it anyway. The solenoid could also be going bad. It really has to be either a bad ground, battery and/or starter. Start with the ground/cable first. How did you check the battery and starter? It is possible that there is a problem with the ignition switch, but that would be the last thing I would look at.
