Ok, thank you everyone for saving me the trouble of a damaged tailgate. This is a GREAT forum.
Now.............which one!? I am looking at the LOD or Bestop.
I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible, keeping my stock bumper would help with this.

Here's the reason why I have a big ol' honkin spare tire carrier on my Jeep.
Bent rear tailgate from a 285/75/R16 tire mounted to the factory tire mount:
This is also the reason why you never see any pics of my Jeep with the hard top on. Since bending the rear gate my rear window on the hard top doesn't close correctly.
Personally I would put as little weight as possible on the rear gate. If you're moving up to a bigger spare I'd seriously consider getting some kind of rear tire carrier or mount it in the cargo area. However, you have have much better luck than me.

Okay......this is what I'm thinking......All I really need is half an inch to clear the bumper. I am thinking that MAYBE if I air down the tire it would fit in just above the bumper and rest on it a little which would take pressure off of the stock carrier. I would just have to keep an air compressor on board which would be no problem. I don't know if it would work because the mud tires I have aren't very pliable even with no air in them at all.
I would just slap the spare tire carrier on the credit card but I have already spent soooo much money trying to fix my death wobble (not to mention the lift and tires). But from EVERYTHING that I am reading, it seems that this would be the best thing to do. The last thing I want to do is damage the tailgate.

I had a 35" spare on an alloy rim on my stock spare tire carrier for 3 years. Yeah, it's warped my tail gate but the tire carrier just finally gave up the ghost a few weeks back and went in the garbage. What let me run that big of a tire on mine was the 1" BL I have on there. So the tire sat right on top of the rear bumper.
I would not however put one of those extension thing on the stock tire carrier. Joe originally got one of the those for the JK and we didn't even put the tire on when we got that thing on there. It would've added some serious stress to everything.

|SurfnSnow||Mine didn't fail like Jerry's but with a 33' tire and within 2 years there were visible cracks on the carrier and some warpage on the tail gate. Yeah it's alot of money but think of it as insurance in that you won't see your spare bouncing off of your rig on the trail or worse yet on the freeway.|

|Jerry Bransford||The stock carrier isn't up to the added weight and especially the added leverage even if spaced out further only by the width of the pucks. I did that with a 33x12.50 tire for a few months and the spare tire carrier itself cracked and failed.|

it wont help to make your tailgate any stronger
I would just buy some hockey pucks, cut them to size and then put them in as spacers and use the stock mount, accomplishes the same thing (clearing bumber) and saves $60

Anyone use the Olympic EXTENDED HEAVY-DUTY TIRE MOUNT?
I am trying to get my 285/75r16 spare tire on my Jeep and can't afford a heavy-duty spare carrier. Anyone know anything about this Olympic carrier that mounts to the stock carrier holes?
