Drivetrain Noise, no 4wd

Hello all,

I decided to turn to the wealth of information on forums to try to diagnose my friend's jeep. Here is the relevant information:

1998 Jeep Wrangler 5spd
6 Cylinder
210k Miles

Today it started making noise from underneath the shifter that is speed dependent, doesn't go away with the clutch in. The 4wd stopped working as well. It runs normally in RWD mode with no vibrations or driveability issues. I am thinking transfer case...

Are there any diagnosis steps that I can take to further pin this down before I rip this sucker apart? Thanks in advance!
