Heck The standard belts always held my kid's seats just fine. You may be able to find a seat that fits better. But they hated riding in the back on the highway, and I only drive 55. Too loud, too windy. But they sure love it in 4wd.

Captnrich My 5 YO loves it around town. I do try to avoid the highway due to the wind. She aways wears sunglasses and has her hair up. As for the seating, I bought new car seat that will accomodate a child up to 65" tall and 120 lbs. Britax but I can't remember the model. I installed extra tie down points where the stock seatbelts attached. I then used the LATCH system to connect the seat to the tie down points. The seat is very secure in the Jeep. As stated by others above, it is a personal parenting decision.

I have recieved a snarky comment from one lady in a parking lot when she spotted the seat. You know when someone starts a conversation with "Um, I'm not judging, but how does THAT work?" that she is in fact judging.

One thing that I did consider is that my Jeep has a family roll bar which should provide more protection.

I will read up on wind exposure and hearing development. Thanks for the tip.

turdhurdler For securing the child seats, your local police station may have someone there that can advise on the best way to attach the seats. My buddies wife did that because she did not know if it was best to use the brackets that mount to the rear of the seat (passenger car) or to use just the seat belt anchor points.

JackdUp This response is not in any way a personal attack nor questioning your abilities as a proud parent.....only an observation.

As a parent, you are ultimately responsible for the welfare of your child/children. I am sure you already know this. Asking what age is appropriate for back seat babies in an open vehicle is like asking others how they raise or discipline their children. You obviously have concerns. Follow you instinctive nature to provide a safe and secure environment to your precious and irreplaceable cargo. Besides, did you know that constant exposure to wind resistance effects hearing? A growing childs development may be more sensitive than a full grown adult. Just something to consider..... Happy Thanksgiving

4Jeepn Took mine wheeling when she was 17mos, but was in a ZJ.(she feel asleep) The YJ they ride in all the time.. with the back window up/side windows out of. Have not done full top due to sun, not wind. Just std car seat and depending on the seat belts you have( auto lock or not) I use a H clip(by grecco?) to make sure the car seat does not move. My kids seems to like the air and they will have sun glasses on.

InfernoGirl Wow they're proud of those aren't they? SpiderWeb makes a similar product, and then there's Raingler nets and Smittybuilt nets too...

As far as how old for the kiddos, obviously not until they're big enough to let you know when they are uncomfortable.... Then stay off the highway, it's a lot windier in the back than the front, and sometimes it can really make it hard to breathe or just plain beat you to death... No clue about anchoring the seats, but if you search around you'll find things about them. I've seen them before, just never paid attention since my kids have been out of car seats for a while now...

ROC SOC solution

Our concern of the open jeep was our two German Shepherds. Not so much keeping them in but keeping well meaning others out. Our solution was the Roc Soc that ROG DOG Fabrication sells.

ROC DOG Roc Soc

There is a center curtain available as well that separates the tub from the seats up front.

Toddlers and kids in jeeps

When (what age) do you think it is safe to ride with your kids in the back with the top off? How do they handle the wind? Also, do you just ratchet strap their carseats to the tiedowns on the bed of the box? Any examples or ideas would be appreciated. Oh, are people going to think I'm crazy when I strap my kids down in a 50mph wind tunnel?
