I ran a detroit in the CJ rear axle.. was great in snow. No wacky stuff, You knew what it would do in about 10 mins of driving it. Now a auto locker in the front in snow.. bad news, makes steering harder and lost of pulling back and forth.

I have also ran f/r arb's, which was the best of both worlds.

530ktm I have the Lock Right in the front and the Detroit in the back. On the street in 2 wheel drive the front locker is unnoticeable. For the most part the Detroit is unnoticeable too, except for some clunking once in a while and some slight jerking in the turns. Once you learn the characteristics of the Detroit, you can drive like it does not even exist.

rrich The best thing about a selectable locker is YOU CAN TURN IT OFF when you don't want it - whether it's in the street or off road! There are times you want the wheels to be able to turn independently.
You have no choice with the non selectable types.

OX gets a bad rap because folks don't maintain it properly or use common sense. In every case where I've repaired one, the cable was not kept adjusted properly, (routed improperly, sharp of angles, kinked etc) or the operator didn't use finesse when operating it. Inside the dogs round off or break, the cable stretches etc.

You cannot just pull the handle forcefully and expect it to engage. The dogs have to line up and slip together. Put a light pressure on the handle and roll a little to let it slide in, you'll feel it slip in.

An air locker like ARB is more fool-proof, it does not engage till the dogs line up properly - it cannot be forced. (But if you put it under load before it's fully engaged, you'll break it.)

The Rubicon lockers have an idiot light that tells you it's "ready" and fully engaged - it flashes until it's fully engaged. If OX and ARB put an indicator light to tell when it's fully engaged it would prevent lots of problems that could easily be avoided.

The trouble with the Rubicon lockers, especially the rear, is they are weak. The rear uses a smaller dog ring because has so much packed into it. It's not only a selectable locker, but it's also a limited slip.

Jerry Bransford My Detroit Locker was, within just a few days of learning how to drive it, extremely well behaved and those riding with me usually had no clue of its presence. It would only remind me of its presence once every great while with a minor lurch or snap. Rare enough that I almost forgot it was back there most of the time. By far, my Detroit Locker is my all-time favorite locker and I would gladly swap my current set of Rubicon Lockers for Detroit Lockers. I put over 120K miles on that locker and I miss it (and that Jeep).

Ibuildembig Whoever said you can't tell a locker is there doesn't have one. They squeak and pop and boom around corners,,,while unlocking and locking. They can also make you do a 180 on wet pavement. Not for the inexperienced jeeper

yjkid95 If your going to fork out the money for a locker you really should not skimp out. ARB is the best selectable locker out there right now. As far as a automatic locker detroits the way to go. I've heard that you almost cant even tell its there and one of the best behaved lockers out there. I'm sure Jerry can tell you his experience with detroit.

kcpep I have OX lockers front and rear, 30 & 44. No problems whatsoever.

Jerry Bransford I'm no fan of the Ox locker and I'm an even worse fan of the ECTED. Why do you want a selectable locker up front? I've had both automatic and selectable lockers front and rear and up front I really prefer an automatic.

Ibuildembig You can use a cheap compressor or a motor driven one to combat the 200 tag on their unit. I have seen the cables on OX's break over and over...and it doesn't like to engage very easily.

BFYTW Yeah. That seems to be what I hear but u have the added expense of air source, lines, etc with an ARB. I dunno. Thanks. Taking all opinions for advisement.

locker opinion

Needing some opinions. I'm starting to look at lockers more seriously. hopefully going to pull the trigger on a setup soon... I have been wanting to go with the ox locker for awhile now, but im concerned about issues with the cable system adj. etc.. So anyone have any experience with the eaton E locker, or the Auburn electronic locker.
Probably going to do a locker in the rear 44 for now and leave the front 30 open until I can just afford a dana 44 front upgrade stuffed with a locker in package.. dont wanna spend the money to lock the 30 just to ditch it later.
