Dempsey People do swap 4.0 in older CJ's. Seems the tranny bolts up sometimes but not always. It's not gonna fall in there though. I would anticipate a lot of pain.

Being I am a old school CJ guy I would recommend leaving the 304 in it but that's just me. The cj will be worth more with the 304. Everybody loves a V8.

penguin_in_a_cj if you do not have luck with bellhousing I am pretty sure advanced adapters will have something to make it work or do it old school and use a steel wheel from a junk yard

Badge1236 It probably with swap. Just remember to get all the computer stuff from the donor. You will need it and it is not on the cj most likely. Unless that is not the original engine.

CJ7 Motor Swap

I've just recently picked two different jeeps one being a 1978 Jeep CJ7 and the other one being a 1988 Jeep Cherokee. The CJ7 has a locked up motor and the Cherokee runs great with low miles, the CJ7 has a 304 in it and the cherokee has a 4.0 litre w/ auto trans. Being new to these Jeeps, my question is will the motor and trans from the cherokee work in the CJ7 and what will I have to change if anything.

Thanks
