Kilroy Lockers are great for snow. If you do not have them, you will get stuck more often.

SilverTJMike Jeep with a group when you start out. That way if you don't have the recovery gear, someone else who does can help you out. Just makes sense. Check out the video Getting Unstuck, education is the key to safe jeeping. Winches, hi lifts, etc are extremely dangerous when used improperly.

I went with a winch then lockers and jeep with friends.

lancetkenyon With lockers, you will elimnate about 95% of the needs for a winch. For the other 5%, nothing beats a winch..........except a buddy with a winch to go first.

Out of the 30+ trails I regularly wheel, I can think of 3-4 which require ME to use a winch. 2 that requires EVERYONE to use a winch, and about half that requires well built rigs with 2 lockers and 35s minimum to use one.

A lot depends on what trails you run and your driving skills.

URascal I got my Jeep hung up in the snow, yesterday. No place to afix my winch. Lockers wouldn't have helped either. Thankfully, the mall manager saw my predicament and got some of his security people to push me off. Quite traumatic for a while. UR

wranglerYJnewb if u put a auto locker in the front will it not engage/be used as long as your not in 4wd?

Sort of. The Ected is comprised of a clutch pack. In "off" mode, the clutches are fairly loose and thus the diff acts like a typical limited slip. In "on" mode, the electrical input tightens the clutch pack to simulate a mechanical locker. I've never run one myself, but I've seen many Jeepers express concern about things like longevity of the clutches, true effectiveness of a clutch pack compared to honest-to-goodness gears in a true mechanical locker, etc.

If you care enough to want a selectable locker and you're willing to spend the money required to have one, I suggest you skip the Ected and instead get a true mechanical selectable locker (ARB Air Locker, or maybe an Eaton ELocker if you're installing it in a D30 or D35).

JDGROVER Get a come along they sell them at harbor freight for 30 bucks rated 4 tons. untill you can afford a winch.

mum954 Hope this isn't a complete stupid question. Does a limited slip / selectable locker exist? Instead of just open or locked. I figure LS would be great for normal driving on snow/ice, but you have lockers if you need them. Does this type of logic make any sense?

WVRUBI Get your lockers and a Hi-Lift until u save the money for your winch. A Hi-Lift and a little elbow grease will serve good enough to get you unstuck, most of the time.

AtcoTrailsINC This question can really only be answered by what kind of wheeling you do. For me i carry a shovel, a good set of tools, a tow strap and snatch strap, and a come-along (poor mans winch ) until i can afford a good winch. Wheeling in the pine barrens i get more use out of those items then i would a locker. Of course as jerry said if your wheeling with a group and one or two people have one than you really dont need one being as jeepers are some of the nicest trail buddies around The only time i could use a locker is when im doing climbs in the quarry near me but even than i kinda enjoy the challenge of open diffs. Besides if not used correctly a locker can just put you in more trouble and if your axle is not good to handle the strain of a locker you might just be ending your weekend a lot sooner than you would like.

Also lets not forget the most important piece of trail gear.....a buddy!

BigHazard Lockers make your jeep axle spin both tires or nothing. you get into mud now and light them up a lot of times you will spin a single tire. Lockers will fix that. they are actaully in your pumpkin with your ring and pinion. A mini-spool / posi is sort of the same thing, well same result

BigHazard my warn 8000lb copetition winch. This is probably my 10th 4x4 and nothing is better than a winch.. hands down. I now have 2. My jeep has one mounted and I have another that is mounted to a reciever hitch. take a battery with you and you can put it on anything. going to build custom jumper cables for it.

dmiller369 i thought the locking hubs engauged a locker i guess i dont understand those. but i do understand the diff. types of lockers and what they do for you.

Here's an article you can read that may explain lockers and limited slip differentials to you. What? Why do I need a locker? I thought I had 4WD!

Jerry Bransford Manual hubs only allow you to unlock the hubs. The TJ's hubs are always locked, they never unlock. They are engaged 100% of the time. And hubs have nothing to do with whether an axle has a locker or not.

Peepers I belive locking hubs is not the same as a locker. you have to get out and engage them rather than vacuum or electronic ones that engage when you put it in 4wd

dmiller369 i guess another concernt i have with the winch is some times you need pulled out backwards ( there is just no going forwards). but with the winch on the fround how do you get out? does it make it pointless then?

-i have been off roading for years. just never in i jeep. and sometimes it doesnt matter how much exp. you have it just dont cut it. not i have never had a winch on my old trucks but they did have locking hubs.

alstjruby03 stuck up to my axles in a muddy rut. lockers only allowed all the tires to spin in the mud.only way out was with a winch.no driving skill would have worked.i am still cleaning mud from my skid plate.thumbs up on a winch.
