On the one that failed, and on mine - those intake airlines had been damaged by rocks and bushes pulling and scraping on them. If I remember right, one of his had been pulled completely off.
I moved mine before they sucked in dirt, but he wasn't so lucky.
If you only use it at the mall, there wouldn't be any problem.
I ran a new intake line terminated in a little in-line fuel filter.
And - while I was doing it I found the vent line from my tranny/transfer case had been damaged too. I replaced and rerouted it, then used some plastic wrap-around shielding to help it live longer.
It's amazing how much damage a bush or tumbleweed can do. I hit a tumbleweed on the hiway in my van once - it was unavoidable. It ripped out all my tailight/hitch wiring and caught the oil pressure sending unit's wire. When it pulled on the wire it broke off the sending unit - big oil leak!
I had to tow it home.
While I was fixing it I noticed a small water leak. A stick was sticking out of the lower hose. And it wasn't even a big tumbleweed!
Whenever possible it's good practice to modify things before they give trouble. ie: Do you put skid plates on before or after the damage is done?

|Rubicon2||Nice. I didn't know they ran the intake lines up high. I figured they pulled air in down low by the pumps. I guess I never really looked that close to notice that. Thanks for the info Jerry!|

|Jerry Bransford||By design, the Rubicon's air compressors should not be able to suck in any water. Like the transmission, transfer case, and both axles, the remoted air intake for both compressors is up high next to the gas filler cap. The only way water could make it inside is if the air hose intakes were removed from or pulled off of the compressor air intakes.|

Yes, happened to a friend. It didn't go as far as the diffs, but the mud killed the pumps. That's how we found out they are around $300 EACH.
After his experience I moved mine up from the crossmember in "Harm's Way" to under the hood in front of the power brake booster.
The hardest part is making a bracket to mount them - easy. The wires and hoses need to be re-routed but that's no biggie.
Since then I've moved 3 or 4 for people.

So I was sitting here thinking about the lockers on my 2005 Rubicon and began to wonder: has anyone ever had a problem of sucking water into the pumps and then into the lockers themselves in deep water?
