Proud Rebel I bought the Hella 550 FFs, I love'em! They have a nice beam and are thin enough to fit into tight places. And you can find replacement bulbs pretty easy.

cheap_jeep I have 2 pr of the Hella compact 4000's. I converted them to HID and absolutely love them. I use them for back road driving mostly. They are the driving pattern and are a bit tight for they bumper fogs. I have been thinking about replacing them with a set of "Hella luminator compacts" as they are for on road driving and have a much wider beam. The 4000's and the luminators are well built lights. cast aluminum case with very strong adjustable bases. you get no light leakage and they take abuse. Have been using them for years on my race trucks and buggies. I can't speak for KC's because every pair I had the stamped steel casings always tore from stress fatigue(constant beating) or rusted out. Haven't used them in years.
I used the RR mounts and had to bend my antenna to follow the pillar and run behind the light. only issue I can say I had.

John412 I dont often use my windshield lights except for trail riding but the bumper driving lights are a regular part of my day. I liked KC's pre determined harness with wiring that seemed half way decent. Plus they were easily available through the channels I use. The Hella's like on my XJ seem overpriced for what they are.

dougncrew I have KC's on the windshield and I cant even remember the ones on the front. But that being said I have had no problems with the kc's on the KC brackets.

Ill look into that. We were just enjoying my 130 watt KC slimlights on the ride home from work tonight. Make the snow covered PA back roads alot more comforting than the stock lighting

Hilldweller For slow driving, check out the Bosch. They're about $100 for a set ------ smallish also. Nice wash of light.

John412 Ill have to look at some of th e brands I can order and compare some lumens compared to the price. I do know that the KC's are rather expensive but to a person like me I never thought much of the quality eiter way. I do know they are alot nicer construction than alot of the 20$ sets we sell but also 10X the money. I am familar with the DE's but dont think they would look good on my jeep unless I hid the in the grill area. They also cost 150$ . Thanks for your input.

For offroad only, I nod towards the highest lumen per buck with a decent spread. KC, Lightfarce, IPF, etc ---- none of them are legal for use on the street. KC is made in China and isn't much of a light anymore.
So, for cheap and stinky, a nice Chinese set of HIDx lights throws about 3000 lumens each and pulls less than 7 amps for the set. They're not expensive and they're quite durable.
For some more money and a bit more sex appeal, Rigid Industry's new Dually D2 puts out a stinkload of light (2600 lumens each) and pulls even less amperage.

For a driving light, if you want to go legal, Cibie Oscars are the industry standard.
If you want to look legal (and probably won't ever get hassled), I still like the Hella Rallye 4000 ---- I don't want a 10,000,000 candlepower hot spot with no peripheral light like some of the brands provide. I also don't like peaks and valleys, weird artifacts, obscure replacement bulbs, etc.

For fogs I like Bosch Compact 100s or Hella Micro DEs.

I sell both at my store and have no brand loyalty and really could care less about lights but I cant see at night on back roads and love my AUX lighting. Please explain, I lurk on this forum alot and dont post much and I realize people seem to respect your opinion for some reason on lighting. I find KC and Hella to be over marketed and easily accessible for the average consumer. What would you find as a quality off road light and why?

I must add I dont have my lights for show and use them often on back roads as my eye sight is poor even with glasses.

GoldenSahara00 I have the 100 watt daylights on windshield and they light up like crazy. long range not driving, the driving lights have the more spread out light pattern which is better suited for the bumper. Im considering moving my daylighters down their and putting a smaller light on my windshield for the vision obscurity reasons mentioned above. its not that bad though, just gota lean forward around left hand turns. ive had it bother me maybe 4 or 5 times in the past couple months.

Hilldweller The 500s are among Hella's worst performing and KC doesn't make anything that's quality.
I'd keep shopping.

Rogerg No experience with Hellas but i got the KC slimlites on my windshield and front bumper.Works great on night runs !!!

No problems at all..it is the best $200 that I've spent.

The H4's are so much brighter, and the lenses are far superior to the stock ones. They have a nice, crisp cut off and the high beams really reach out there.

My next upgrade will be trying out the Cibie lenses...

I have put crystal vision ultras in my stock headlights and they are ehh on low beam but great on high beam, plus they look cool being a really clear white light. I get flashed alot with my stock headlights and I contribute that to the fact the JK sits higher than most vehicles. Any problems with the Hella headlight upgrade?

They have taken a bunch of stone hits and the headlights are simply amazing for the price.

I've found that with the headlight upgrade, I do not need my aux. lights as much, if at all......

John412 I have the KC slim lights on my XHD bumper and windshield mounted with RR mounts. I have long range 130 watt on the Window mounts and do not receive much glare at all from them (black Jeep if that matters). If ever a picture would upload from this computer or my i phone I would love to show you but it never works and its frustrated me to no end. Love the added light on the back roads around where I live and mounted switches where I can easily turn them off if another car is coming. I typically use the bumper mounted lights on the road with my regular head lights and it makes a world of difference. All depends on what you plan on doing as to what type of lighting you need. Where I live both my Jeeps have bumper mounted AUX lighting and they are used often.

stangmata I have a set of hella lights and it will be my last set. The lense leaks light through the edges and actually reflects back into my eyes. I can't even turn them on.

JIMBOX Yea, there's a ˝" hole in the cowl cross member(underneath) that the cowl attaches to and I don't like to just stuff the wires in a gap--looks like a GOLDBERG install-

I noticed that you have the metal wire jacket going into the hood from your daylighters. Did you drill that hole in the hood?

JIMBOX If you get the wider windshield bases, the light will interfere with your radio antenna-

I use the KC Highliters and the base gives 1" clearance for the radio antenna and the lights are very bright !

B4x4wrangler Well my personal opinon, is the KC lights actuall put out a brighter beam, but the Hella lights which i use is a better looking light, but not quite as brite as the KC's

KC vs. Hella Lights

ok guys (and gals), I know what you are going to say...but hold on for a minute.

Here is what I found out:
since I want to mount the extra lights onto the windshield (not on bumper, not on roof), I did some research what brackets I should buy. I even made cardboard models of the brackets and the lights (yes, you think I am a nerd - but I am the kind of guy who is an engineer at heart). My conclusion is that the MOPAR windshield brackets are the best designed - by far. The placement of the bracket (placed low and to the outside) minimizes the interference with the driver's view. The KC brackets, for example, are way too high and too much towards the inside.
As far as the lights go, I initially thought the slim lights from KC (long-range) would be the way to go. I did some more research, though, and found the Hella lights actually to be quite good (500 series, driving lights). I also speke with tech support at Hella and learned how much enginnering they put into their lights.

What I want is a small diameter lights with lots of light output, supplemeting the OEM high beam lights, when off roading.

What do you guys and gals think????
