ncossey I have the smittybilt xrc8 comp, I use my winch weekly, and Ive had zero issues. Mine has been submerged in water, covered in mud and snow, had frozen rope, pretty much whatever you can throw at it, and it still works great.

Costs more, but American made

rics1997 I have seen several good winches break over the years even Warns and usually, not all the time, it is because people buy under size winches. Of course any product you buy can fail for one reason or another. Your Jeep may be under 3500 lbs but if it is stuck in mud the force needed to pull it out can be multiplied and if your winch isn't up to the task it will break.

The smallest winch you should buy is 8000 lbs

tsaf I've been running the smitty XRC8 for almost two years now on my TJ, and have had no problems with it. I've used it a hand full of times to pull myself and others out and it's never let me down. And it was way cheaper than the warn. I put it on the smitty's XRC front bumper and you would think they would go together easily but I had to do a little modifying to get the control box on.

thewasel Here's my winch thread, I have the same bumper and recently mounted a Superwinch EPi9.0S. I haven't personally put it through the paces yet but from my research it was the best sealed solonoid winch for the money. (I got a killer deal on it that I think is no longer active...~$560 to my door) You can probably still find one ballpark $600ish if you look around.

Oh yeah, and let's just say it was a 'snug' fit but if you want it you can make it happen! (see the link)

Littleyellow You know you should get the warn because you want to.. There was just a really good sale on the m8000.

In my non biased opinion warn is better than smitty.

Quick story...

My friends 8000lb smitty broke on the trail pulling himself free. The whole drum fell apart. Never seen anything like it. Someone will never have a problem while some will get all of them. Every jeep is different, but i do know i used my warn more than he did his and mine is like new still.

rics1997 Warn is the best hands down and they are extremely proud of that fact as seen in their high prices.

There are several that are a step down and are around the same quality. And depending on who owns them they will tell you it is good.

Smittybilt, Ramsey, Mile Marker, Superwinch, and Rugged Ridge

I am missing one and the name is blowing by me but these are all good winches if you don't won't to pay Warn prices.

I went with the Smittybilt XRC8 myself because I found a great price on Amazon but watch out for most on E-bay other then the ones listed above. They are cheap because they are cheap.

As far as Synthetic , I plan on going to it later but got cable right now. Cable is a lot cheaper but weighs a lot more. Synthetic won't rust and is a lot lighter but either will work.

idea's one what winch

looking for a good winch. planning on picking up the Rugged Ridge XHD stubby front bumper, with the center hoop

that has the capability to:

1) be reliable
2) will pull itself out
3)will help pull others out

decent price

Synthetic rope or Metal wire rope?

not really looking for the onboard air, but should I? wouldn't the size be a problem, i was thinking the MV-50 would be ok for onboard air source

Whats your opinions on a good one to get?
