The Jeep EV Range-extended Electric Vehicle uses an electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery system, and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. The 200 kW (268 horsepower) electric motor generates 400 N•m (295 lb.-ft.) of torque. With approximately eight gallons of gasoline, the Jeep EV has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation.
It also produces max torq even at 0 rpm

|omniscientgregg||I don't understand why companies don't design more cars like Tesla's which are super energy efficient and fit them with tiny generators to charge the batteries while you drive. I have a Honda generator, it'll run the ac in my toy hauler for 14 hours on 2.5 gallons of gas.|

Check out Tesla Motors, their new Model S all electric car has a range of 160, 230 or 300 miles depending on options. 0-60 in 5.6 sec a top speed of 120mph. And can be charged in 45 minutes I'd say we are going to start seeing more electric cars in the near future, the battery technology is advancing at a rapid pace. I cannot wait untill these vehicles become more affordable, screw the oil companies
Of course oil prices would go down (supply&demand) but then electric prices would skyrocket And the higher demand for more electrical infrastructure means more work for me

solar pannels on cars that charge all day on the trail? sounds okay to me
and you can also look up cars powered by compressed air tanks. for up to 240 miles or some odd number :O now that would be bad in a roll over, haha. 500 psi tank hits rocks... LOL
anyways, this is easily a possibilty, but the hype about running out of gas is all that, hype. heck everywhere we drill, we dont get anywhere near 100 percent out of the well because its too "difficult" to get. so we still have all that to go back to, and clean up. plus eventually we will develop deep sea drilling and be able to drill on the ocean floor, in possibly the richest oil areas on the planet, and the oceans cover like what 75% of the earth? so thats 300% more oil than we have already gone through. Yea Im not gona worry too darn bad. technology will take care of itself. either way Im keepin my jeep forever

|madcap3693||I don't think electric vehicles are ever going to be much more than toy. We can hardly supply enough electricity as it is right now to consumers. We already have blackouts in the summer when people are running air conditioners. Could you imagine everyone attempting to charge cars? Our electrical grid cannot handle it. Also, no one wants to build more fossil fuel fired plants, dams or nuclear power plants. Sadly, it is going to have to be something else to replace gasoline.|

As stated... 100% electric vehicles will not be viable until battery technology catches up. Electric motors that are large enough to propel a 4000lb vehicle is also going to weigh a bit, and then the battery is going to weigh 3-4x as much. The newer litium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries are amazing as far as power(voltage) and discharge, but on a larger scale, they can be catastrophic if there is any damage to them, and the heavier nickle based batteries are not quite as reliable in the long run. The positives are that electric motors can be built in a number of ways just like internal combustion motors can. They can be built for lots of torque or all out speed.
But in another 10 years or so, when they are able to develop a "friendly" battery that doesn't weigh too much, and can cycle and charge quickly and often, you'll see way more all electric vehicles.

electric engines are ALL torque.
they need better battery technology, i would hate to run out of juice in the middle of nowhere.

Electric Engines off-road. Doesn't seem like it would be the same.
So, as gas prices go up and more talk about going to all electric vehicles in the near future, what are your thoughts about a fully electric 4x4 off-road vehicle?
I think I'd miss the rev of the engine, though my wallet would be happier.
