|bigdog9801||May also (or not) be worth mentioning that when I replaced the clutch I did NOT replace the pilot bearing (I think thats what its called, goes into the engine behind the flywheel). I didnt have a tool to remove it. The old one looked ok though...could this be a cause?|

Various Transmission Issues
I have a 1990 4 cylinder with the AX5 transmission (all stock).
I bought it knowing I had some transmission issues and it no longer works at all. I was looking for some expert opinions/thoughts on a couple questions I have.
1 - Is there any way to tell what the issues related to the tranmission problems are without tearing the transmission apart? I replaced the clutch, but dont know much about transmissions. My symptoms are that I was driving the jeep, heard a loud pop (thought maybe I lost 5th) but then turned out I lost all gears. I couldn't put it back into any gears, even after I replaced the clutch. It grinds some but not terribly bad. Does this give any indication of what would need to be replaced with a rebuild?
2 - If I buy a rebuilt transmission, are there any recomendations on where to get one from, and also, should I just go for an AX15? I may lift it at some point and put bigger tires, but nothing crazy or larger than 4" and 33s (more likely 2.5" and 31s - I would like to be able to go 65 mph).
3 - I dont have much experience with transmissions, but can usually figure out how to fix most issues with my cars. Given that the Jeep isnt my daily driver (clearly) time is not too much of an issue, so how difficult would it be for someone who has never rebuilt a transmission before to do so? I am concerned that I would not be able to identify what gears/parts to replace and that I would end up spending more than just buying a rebuilt one.
I appreciate any feedback you may be able to provide.
