Do this!! ^^^^^^^
I think I got my hose off Amazon took me an hour to do it myself. If you need to cut the hose make sure you cut a little off of each end. And if you plan to put a body lift on leave enough hose to compensate for that too!!

xigiff I found this out there today. I post it here so I can find it later an do this to my own ride.

bmwchicken This started happening to me recently. I didn't know about the recall for the older models, so maybe if we submit enough complaints Chrysler will be forced to issue a recall?

I just submitted the form here. You will need your VIN.

That said its a check valve in the tank that swells and no longer moves. Source is apparently ethanol in the gasoline.

Chryslers response to the complaint.

You bring your jeep in and get it diagnosed.
Call the number in the previous link (1-800-992-1997) and get a case open with chrysler. I think you can do it on there website as well.
Open a case with NHTSA as well.
You WILL need your VIN.

Chrysler will call you, you explain the issue, they call the dealer, they talk, copay and you have a new gas tank installed. Pain in the butt!

I just went through this for my 05 TJ , gas used to dump and spray all over depending on the wind. Works fine now Of course they haven't redesigned the tank yet so it will happen again
How long did that whole process take? from report to replacement and road ready again?

This issue is not going away. Since 10-31-2011 (about 50 days) of the 19 new complaints for the ’06 TJs, 13 have been for fuel spitting out. For the ‘05s - 30 new & 26 for this. That is 39 new complaints in 50 days.

There are 416 complaints filed for the 2006 JEEP WRANGLER +19

Fuel System Gasoline (280) +13
Fuel System Other (7) 0
There are 371 complaints filed for the 2005 JEEP WRANGLER +30

Fuel System Gasoline (259) +26
Fuel System Other (3) 0

69.0% of all complaints (287/416) for ’06 & 70.6% (262/371) for ’05 are fuel related & most are for this fuel spit-back problem.

(There are 127 complaints filed for the 2004 JEEP WRANGLER all catigories)

Go to Consumer Automotive Safety Complaints & Car Problems - ARFC & run the various yrs.

Here is a bulletin: Chrysler claims that the problem is exposure to ethanol (above 10%). They also claim they are going to re-design or re-spec the valve. Well there are already 20 complaints filed on 2010 JKs - the first one in Jan., 2010. At least one complaint was from the VERY FIRST time they filled up!

I think online is better you can see that they have actually gotten it & as noted above, others can see that they are not alone with this problem.

So it is not been fixed even for the 2010 models but most prevalent on '05 & '06s. Some '07 & '08s have been given a lifetime extended warranty on their tanks.

Could you provide a link where we can file complaints? If it's better to send a custom letter, I can do that - just need to know where to send it. (Yeah - I'm being lazy...)
12-10-2011 04:40 PM
SoccerJeni I haven't filed a complaint yet myself, but it is on my list of things to do this week.

Has anyone had any responses from Jeep about this for the '06 or earlier models?

Good point! A lot of times it's in CA & the way they are about guns, it's probably safe but when in NV it's a lot like TX so I will head your caution.

RUBI 4 MY MRS I’m hoping for another push to get the TJs included for extended gas tank warranties like the ’07 &’08 JKs recently got. I have over 325 handles of TJ owners that have complained of fuel spill out when they fill up. These come from the various threads on various forums. Some have filed complaints, some I’m sure haven’t. Let’s all file or re-file. I will continue to add to my list.

If anyone has this problem but has not posted, please do so. We need to know how many TJs are actually having this problem. I know there are always suggestions for work-arounds but please don’t post them here. We want to actually get this resolved.

To help spread the word, I made up some business size cards & carry several everywhere I go. Anytime I see a TJ in a parking lot, I leave one on the windshield. It just asks them if they are having this problem & if so directs them to one of these forums. I hope others will do the same.

The most discouraging thing is that Chrysler has more than doubled the price of replacement tanks. If anyone can verify that they have improved or redesigned the inlet check valve (ICV) let me know. It was supposed to have happened in Feb.

Check valve (ICV) manufactured by Alfmeier.

Also worth noting that while the ’03-’06 TJ tank now lists for $914.00 (last previous price I could find was $427.00), the JK tank lists for $192.00 (2dr) & $265.00 (4dr). All from mopar-wholesale.com (their prices are $630.20, $132.25, & $182.85 respectively)

..and here is the PART NUMBER to the latest Fuel Tank:

52059617-AG COST: $341.60 RETAIL: $427.00

.

52059617AG $914.00 $0.00 $630.20

02-26-2011 03:40 PM
RUBI 4 MY MRS Wake781, no recall yet but we are working on it. The '07&'08s got a warranty extension (unlimited) so there is hope.
02-26-2011 01:58 PM
Wake781 My 05 TJ has this problem. I was wondering if there was a recall that I didn't know about. Glad I found this thread.
02-26-2011 01:49 PM
Tomnjeep I received warranty letter today also, but mine said it was for 2007-2008 Jeep Wranglers. The problem is the "inlet check valve". The warranty extension covers the "fuel spit back condition". The customer service number is 877-426-5337. I hope your jeep is covered, too.
02-24-2011 07:58 PM
wnesbit13 I just got a letter from Chrysler jeep saying that if you take your jeep into the dealership they'll fix the problem I believe free of charge.
02-24-2011 07:17 PM
jkp Agree, everyone with a TJ that develops this problem should continue to file a complaint. I think nearly all of them will eventually have this issue.
