I know that I was having the same problems and was told the same thing. But then the other night I was driving home and everything felt fine and all of a sudden I heard what sounded like a snap and something spinning around. Turned out that my clutch completely went out and couldn't go anywhere. So I would suggest to anyone else that if you are having this problem to go ahead and replace your whole clutch while you're at it and maybe even your flywheel. It'll save you the cost of having to pay for a tow truck to get your jeep back home or to a shop if you don't think you'll be able to do it yourself. Also, though my transmission would have it's good days and bad days. Some days it would run perfectly, not grind at all and not be resistant, then others I was lucky to get it into gear even with the engine off.
So, best thing to do is just to replace your clutch and flywheel while that you have the transmission dropped to replace the slave cylinder. It'll save you a lot of trouble in the long run and it only costs about $300 if you shop around.

Check your fluid First. Check your bleeder screw make sure it’s tight, should be located under the jeep drivers side bell housing area.
If fluid checks out ok.. I would replace your clutch master cylinder.. Costs about 80 bucks and takes an hour at worst even with bleeding the line. Buy a Haynes manual it will walk you through the steps.
If this does not fix your problem you’re screwed! Unless you know someone that can help you drop the transmission and get to your slave cylinder assuming it’s internal. (<-Worst idea ever Jeep) If you get this far you may as well replace your clutch and flywheel if they are worn..

According to some sources that year has a sealed clutch system which would mean replacement of the entire fluid system (Master, slave and lines).
And yes it sounds like the slave cylinder went out. If it is a 258 with an internal slave cylinder/Throwout bearing you will have to drop the tranny to remove and replace the entire assembly inside of the bell housing.
In some 4 cylinder models the slave cylinder is external to the transmission and pushes on the pivot arm which is connected to the throwout bearing inside the bell housing.

|Bs13855||Your buddy might be correct master cylinder. Not the brake master cylinder but clutch master cylinder. Check inside your jeep by the firewall where the clutch pedal is if there is brake fluid there like dripping down or discolored fire wall it's your clutch master cylinder. Also check to see if you have fluid inside of it.|

|Jeepin91YJ||Slave cylinder in located between the motor and the tranny. Have to remove the tranny to replace. Not real hard but I would do it with a lift and tranny Jack or it is a pain. But if your changing that do the master cylinder also. All together parts should be between 140 to 200 buck depending on brand. If you get dealer parts plan on spending alot more. I just did mine a week ago and took me about a full day to. Any questions let me know.|

|89JEEPYJ||u probably have a bad cluth, every light you will probably have to turn it off and you will have to bang shift without the clutch, only prob is you cant down shift soo have fun. im pritty sure ur clutch is shot though, check ur fluids and see if you can bleed the brakes|

Can't shift? HELP
So the other day i go out to my 93 wrangler and attempt to head to my trig final at school. after starting the jeep, i let it sit for a min while i ran back inside to get a book. After getting in the driver seat, i go to put the stick shift into reverse and there is a very loud and pressure feeling grinding noise. After turning the jeep off... i was then able to shift it fine into reverse. Then after in reverse i started it... and was fine, until i tried to shift. COULD NOT SHIFT AT ALL! I then turn off the jeep again... and was able to put it into 3rd gear... and thats it. i can drive it... but there is definitely something wrong with it? any thoughts guys?
