Ok - here's my .02. I'm coming back to the Wrangler family in 2 weeks. Buying a 2Dr Sahara - either black or silver - whichever I get the best deal on. BTW - I've had 10+ Jeeps.
Now my .02 - I would love to see the HP increase and more gears in the Wrangler. But in 2007 I order a first off the line Black Sahara - you couldn't even get a Mygig yet. When i came in - loved it. But you could tell it was first of a new body style. I was one of the lucky ones that had portions of paint missing, orange peel paint, tranny slips, rattles in weird places, and a few other things I can't remember, etc. Nothing major - but still had to fight with Jeep to get the paint corrected. Then I bought a late 2008 Sahara. Much better put together - top to bottom.
I just extensively test drove the '11 - and it's even better. Seriously better.
My concern is a first off the line anything - but especially a Wrangler. This is not a normal 4x4. And while the engine may be tried and true - the manufacturing and assembly is not.
I always try and wait until at least midyear of a major change. There may be no issues at all.
I'm also wondering what the windsheild/front fascia change they are talking about will look like. '11's are in limited run - so what if you don't like the new front?

I am saving untill I see a credible pic or list of details about the 2012.
I am confident that I will have a good idea of what will be coming out early enough through websites like allpar etc to quickly snatch up a 2011, if the 2012 turns out to be an overgrown compass.
I really don't think that would happen, but that is my plan.

|KSCRUDE||I have a 11 on the way. 2 door auto sahara loaded up. If they come out with the pickup wrangler in 12 I will buy one of them also. It is to be built on the 4 door platform with a extended cab of some kind it looks like. I would go ahead and buy as you can always trade up a jeep, and way cheaper then trading wives. You only live once and life is short.|

|jeepnpete||I love my 11 sahara. Driving it and never looking back. I look at buying a car like buying a computer. If the car or computer fits todays needs- then do it. If not than wait. There will always be something new that comes out, you just gotta decide if whats out today is what you want/need.|

|1999TJWrangler||I wish I could get a 70th anniversary edition. Not that I've seen alot of pics or something, but anniversary editions are always something to show off years later, in my opinion.|

Yep, I'll be getting a 2012 since my current lease ends at the end of this year. It will be my first Jeep.

I have owned my 11 for 6 weeks and love it. However, if I had joined this forum BEFORE I bought my Jeep and found out there was going to be the possibility of a more powerful engine by the end of this year, I would have waited.
Maybe I can still get a good trade deal by the end of this year!

i'm in the same boat as you Oswyn. i was going to get the 2011 but i read that the wrangler was due for an engine upgrade so i found this forum and was going to ask your exact question, haha. nice to know that it is 2012!
i'll wait and save up. worst case scenario, some 2011s will still be available (maybe even cheaper) when the 2012s are officially announced and released.
any idea if the wrangler price is expected to increase w/ the upgrade? did the other vehicles w/ the new engine increase in price?

The 2011 Grand Cherokee has been for the most part problem free with the new engine, new suspension, etc. Just making the comparison from the new 05 and all the problems it had. Based on what I see out of the new or redesigned vehicles so far, reliability, fit and finish are the priority. the pentastar has been trouble free in all of the vehicles. And if they add a new trans I'm sure they have already been testing it knowing the Wranglers are abused compared to the GCs etc.
Just my opinion though, as Daggo said it's all conjecture until we see and drive the 2012.

I'd be more concerned with other potential issues if they're planning on other major upgrades.

|Doogals||I'm in the same position as the OP. Another thing you might want to consider is the possibility that you might not like the design/aerodynamic changes made to the 2012 model, at which point the only 2011 models left will be remaining inventory. If you're picky about colour/options it might be more difficult at that time to get exactly what you're looking for in a 2011. Whereas right now you still have the option to factory order a 2011 model if the dealer can't find one with the exact options your looking for.|

|JKT69||I never like being the first to purchase something when it's a new addition. To me it's like beta testing. There will be a lot of unforeseen problems with the new motor or transmission, which will only come out after they hit the street and thousands of ppl are riding around in them...they'll get the issues fixed and have them corrected on the '13 model. Just my two cents...I would buy now, it's tried and true, or wait until '13.|

The auto industry is changing fast. Very fast. It's reasonable to assume that there will be multiple changes EVERY year. Some, you'll like.....others maybe not so much....but overall autos are going to get safer, smarter, and greener. New colors, new features, new design touches. There will always be something to "wait" for, but you're gonna be missing out on the fun until then. Personally, I couldn't stand it.....I went ahead and bought. The high resale of Wranglers will always allow you to move up later.

It depends on whether you want fun this year or next lol.
The 2012 sound like it will be a good Jeep, hopefully the design changes won't take away from what a Jeep should look like. The only thing I see about the 2012 especially with a new transmission is the unknown. Will there be unforeseen problems with the combination? It was like the 3.8 when it first came out. The automatic trans that was in the cars ran without no issues with that motor but the same combo in the mini vans the transmission failed badly over time blowing out the hydraulic seals because of the additional weight of the van over the cars.
Personally I am hoping there is no problems but I want someone else to be the Guinea pig for now and I am enjoying a very capable 2010 that I love to drive.

No one really knows the answers. It's all conjecture. If you're in a position to wait I think that would be a good move. I'd find it hard to beleive that they are going to make changes that won't be better. Of course that happens every year.
2012's will probaly start production in August and be available late September or October.

Hello, I'm new to the forum and have been considering purchasing my first Jeep Wrangler. I don't currently own an SUV or truck, nor have I before, but I have been off-roading with friends in a Jeep and aim to do more someday.
After some careful deliberation my interest settled on the 2011 Wrangler Sahara model, primarily for the aesthetic and interior enhancements over the Sport model. I was all but ready to make the purchase, until I stumbled on news of upcoming changes to the Wrangler for the 2012 lineup, some of which Chrysler seems to have confirmed...

...So my question is, with the new Pentastar V6 (slightly better gas mileage, significantly more horsepower), a new automatic transmission (which I prefer over manual), and probable design changes, should I wait for the 2012 models or stick with the 2011?
I'm not in a mad rush to get a Wrangler at this very moment, and for a variety of substantial reasons (credit growth, potential for better down payment, hopefully a better selection at the offset, etc.) I think it would be an advantage to wait, but will the performance and design updates be so much of a difference over the 2011 models?
Also, when is the 2012 expected to be revealed and released?
