There are situations where this isnt always true brother. This last snow/ice storm we had this week really gave my jeep problems in 2wd. I couldnt get going in some sections of road, so i switched back and forth between 2wd and 4wd.

tommywo coop42 and PecoRiver...EXCELLENT link!!! It was really helpful and went a long way in explaining the "do's and don'ts" of 4WD. The additional inks in that article are also helpful; apparently I'm not the first one to ask this same question. I feel a lot more educated on how to protect my ride. Thanks again for all the info guys. As usual, everyone on this forum is extremely helpful.

tommywo Thanks Trunz. Let me clarify just a bit; when I say clear stretches of road, I meant to say intermittent patches. Typically there will be a lot of ice/snow on the road with a stretch of, say, a 1/4, 1/2 or full mile of clear road. Just wondering if I need to disengage the 4WD in those fairly short stretches or if its okay to leave it on because it's such a small distance. Anything over 1-2 miles and I've been turning it off. I'm in the habit of engaging the 4WD at a stoplight/sign since the Jeep tends to slide sideways a bit on slick roads when accelerating from a stop when in 2WD. I don't want to clip the car next to me if the Jeep slides sideways while accelerating.

Hellbilly I live in a snow filled place as well and I just engage it when necessary. Fresh snow (lots of it) or icy corners and stretches, otherwise it is 2WD, traction control on or partially on. You will be able to feel the road conditions and know when to use 4WD.

Trunz150 If there are stretches of road with dry pavement that is an indicator that you probably dont need 4wheel drive, so i would just suggest using rearwheel you will be fine with the traction control on, i dont use 4wheel unless im off-roading or there is fresh snow that has fallin and im messin around otherwise you can drive with caution well in 2wheel, but lets get some other opinions to see what everyone thinks

Extended Use Of 4WD In Snow/Ice

I bought a 2007 Wrangler a couple weeks back and haven't had much time to play around with the 4WD on/off the road. Reading the owner's manual, Jeep does not recommend engaging the 4WD system on dry or wet roads to minimize tire wear and drive train damage. It also says not to exceed 50mph in 4-wheel mode. That's all pretty straight forward so I'm clear on those points.

However, there's been a massive amount of ice/snow where I'm at. Is it safe to use the 4WD continuously in these conditions? In most cases, road conditions are mixed. Some stretches are clear with other patches clogged with ice/snow that make for poor handling. Is it safe to leave my ride in 4WD continuously in these conditions...or should I simply toggle back/forth between 2WD and 4WD as stretches of road present themselves?

I really don't want to do any undue damage to the drive train so any feedback would be appreciated. Thanx!
