thumping/grinding noise releasing clutch

ok this just started happening last night...when i am at a dead stop and start off in 1st gear, when i release the clutch i hear a thumping/grinding noise but i wont hear while shifting through the other gears. I will also hear this noise while braking and sometimes very faintly during crusing. and at one point i heard a loud rattle like an exhuast pipe rattle while i was at a dead stop. it kind of sounds like a spring being compressed also. i have no idea what it could be but i think part of it might be the parking brake....but im not an expert

i have been parking my passenger side wheels up pretty high on snow banks on the side of the street so i dont get side swiped from through traffic on the street. I dont know if that may have something to do with it...

any suggestions or advice on what it may be would be awesome
