|petercass88||sounds like i need to do a tune up... I have a 95 2.5L with 33" tires on Dana 60 axles and I get 10-11 MPG (original 4.10 gears... bleh. I am lucky to go faster than 65MPH!)|

|Heckapunchez||I get 10 mpg. Period. city or highway. My goal is to get at least 16mpg right now. I have a feeling that something is wrong somewhere and slowly but surely I'm dumping money into it to get it fixed. My 2011 Jeep got 25+ on the highway drive from cali to colorado. While I had to make sure I filled it up every ~180 miles (those uphills). I literally feel like everytime I move my jeep from its parking spot I should make a stop at the gas station currently.|

|Iceweasle33||Best way to get better gas mileage is to get another vehicle. You have to remember that a jeep is built for economy. It has the aerodynamics of a shoe box... It is not geared for "highway" speeds. Anything you do to it such as cold air intakes, performance chips, or platinum tip spark plugs are going to give you minimal improvement, if any. Remember, it's built to be all-terrain vehicle.|

|TampaChris||Remember, when you put larger tires on, the rotation takes longer than the stock ones. Thus, when your speedometer reads 55 MPH you are actually going 60 MPH. That changes your distance as well. If you go ten miles on your big tires, you actually went 13. I am just making the numbers up, you will have to figure out for yourself exactly what that is. Also consider that when buying a used Jeep. YOu have more miles on that engine than you thought.|

I get 17-18 mixed 70%city consistently. i just shift at 2000-2500 and never depress the petal more than 2/5ths.
highway i've gotten 25 on 100% highway with no stops, but i would say 23 average

I'm running an 89 4.2L (258) with a Pugeot 5 speed manual. Running on 30's. With stock emissions
As far as the power band goes, at 55 mph I am hitting 1500-1600 rpm.
I can get 16 mpg when I jack rabbit and rsce from stoplights. I do give my self a lot of stopping distance and clutch coast long brfore I brake. Recently, I got 22 mpg without ghe hardtop on for the summer. Bikini top only.
Sometimes, you will actually get better gas mileage when the Oxygen sensor stops working correctly and leans out the fuel by default.
Also, my year didn't have an automatic altitude adjustment so it needs a jumper installed for 4000+ ft.

However, there are computerized ignition control systems that do work, as they let the user control how hot or cold his ignition is going to run, and allows slight adjustment of the timing.

|busemans||no idea man, have to ask in the section for the newer wranglers. we old jeeps here don;t use chips because ours are either carb'd, or the system is not able to run a chip like that|

|busemans||dang, my 93 zj got 13-15 in town and 20-21 on the highway. stock but i changed the t-case for one from a wrangler so i could put it in 2wd. gas mileage didn;t change at all though, i was bummed.|

Go with stock-sized tires, and drive easy if you want better gas mileage, but I don't think Jeep and good Gas mileage goes together atleast with the last 10 or so I have had is has been this way. Tuned-up or not. My 97 ZJ gets 16-18 highway and has seen 20 on one trip, but that is the best I have seen. My 90 YJ gets about 12-14 usually with the 33's and driving easy

|jdeere05||haha, my 91 gets me about 200 miles to a tank of gas on the 2.5 with 35 tires and 4.88 gears, i traded my 2000 f 150 5.4 v8 for it and it was a 25 gallon tank and on a good week was 250 miles to a tank of gas.. but not im happy as could be with this mpg...and i live 5 miles from work so thats a plus too|

i have no idea man, i haven;t gotten close to that except on the highway from north texas driving down to south texas. i was also going down in elevation the whole time. i got something like 14mpg

for this comment, in an automatic jeep with stock tires, 3k rpm is about 79mph and it drinks gas like a drunk college girl drinks alcohol.

several aspects to better mileage
1. Yes, the Jeep IS shaped like a brick. Aerodynamics start to take significant effect at about 50mph. Hold the speed to below 55 mph, 50 is better for mileage.
2. Keep the rpm's up into the power band (2,000 - 3,000).
3. don't jackrabbit the starts and avoid the brakes as much as possible. If you can avoid braking you will not spend all that energy you spent getting there.
4. of course, maintenance and all that too.
5. avoid short drives. Try to combine trips so you don't need to start a cold engine.
6. buy the lowest octane gas that won't ping. The higher octane fuels require a higher operating temperature/flash point. That means that they won't put out as much energy if ignited below the flash point. The most efficient is if the spark plug fires the fuel a microsecond before it compression ingites (diesels).

|MARINE87yj||how are you guys with the 4.2 getting 16? i feel that mine runs good... but i only get around 8 on a good day... any suggestions? I am running factory gears with 32's so i know that doesnt help but at one point it was gettin like 14 with the same setup..and it only has a 2in lift|

|kdub||Oh when I swaped from 29s to 31s my mileage went down to 12mpg till I changed the speed gear.that just dont effect your speed it effects your odometer too|

|kdub||I just swapped from 2.5 to 4.0. I have a manual tranny.no lift 31s.I average the same gas mileage.with 4.10 gears.heavy foot,16. Light foot 18 MPG.it gets better than my 14 MPG f150 I had.by the way that's mixed driving,half city half hwy.mine is a dd|

this thread has been around some years, ha ha ha.
i got 9mpg with my favorite carburetor on my 4.5 with auto trans. i got 10-11 with a weber 34 (but no power). i got 11-12 with any mc2100/2150 i tried (but no power either). i now have a 450cfm holley four barrel and on this tank i got 12.9mpg for all city driving. this is on stock height, 225 size tires, no heavy bumpers, no nothing, just a stock looking jeep.
hit the fuelly link and you can see what i have gotten over hte last 4k miles. it shows the different carbs and the different mileages i have gotten. it shows the highway trips and the all city trips.

I get 18.5 to 20 depending on how I drive, with a stock suspension and 30x9.5/15 tires.
This summer I will lift it 2.5" and run 31s. I hope to average 16-17 after that with stock 4.10 gears. I want to drive a Jeep and I knew MPG would suck when I bought it.

My first wrangler, I bought new back in 95. It was the 2.5 with the 5 speed manual. I was broke and doing hypermiling before it was called that. The best tank I think I got was in the low 20's. The problem is our Jeeps are shaped like a brick. That same motor in another car could get mid 30's. Lifting and bigger tires means even more drag (that re-gearing can't fix).
A diesel swap could help, but I'd have my doubts if anyone got past the mid 30's, so you have to think about how much money you'd have to spend and how long it would take you to recover it.

YJ better gas milage
Hello i have a few tips for better mpg ,when you get on the eway you could find the first semi / big truck and tuck in behind it (drafting) the closer you follow it the better mpg you will get . When driving in the city try timing the lights so you dont have to come to a complete stop and coast as much as possible down hills and approaching a stop / red light ect. never stomp on the gas always take off slow and steady not to mention make sure tires are properly inflated and engine is tuned up. If you follw these tricks and tips they will def help your mpg.(following other vehicles to closely can be dangerous and illegal therefor do so at your own risk)
