Cons_Table I have heard a lot of good things about the riddler covers and this is probably what I will go with. Check out rokmen.com and watch their video on the riddler cover...it's plenty strong enough

dogsbollocks Here is my diff cover with a 2 scrapes already. You can see that one actually bent the lip of the diff cover. I'm concerned that when I catch my diff it might peel off the lip of the cover and dump my fluid. So even if I get a bolt on lower guard, I will still have the same issue. I have seen some diff that don't have a lip.
That still leaves the lower surface exposed though....

30-284 I don't know about the 8.8, but on my Dana 44 the fill plug ended up so low after the rear end was rotated that I couldn't get all of the required gear oil in , so in my case the guard wouldn't have helped, I needed the cover as most of the heavy duty covers have the fill plug up much higher so you can get all of your gear oil in. Just don't fill until gear oil comes out , thats too much, just put in the recomended amount. Oh, That solid cover is very heavy duty and is cast way thick.

99TJCrawler I just did the swap also and I was asking myself the same question. I ended up going with the cover. A lot of the covers that they make are very solid. I got 1/4" steel but some make em out of 3/8. I think that's overkill but thats me. I'm not going to be backing over rocks all the time so I dont think it would be practical for me to buy a skid guard but the plate would definitely prove useful just as a safety measure. I mean really, you're driving forward so anything that is going to touch the diff is going to cause damage to your driveshaft, not your cover. If you feel like you will be doing a lot of rock crawling than i'd say you may want to just go with the guard or even both. That 'SOLID' one doesnt look very thick, I'd be asking them about what gauge steel their using. Get something strong, no sense in doing it twice.

loving my 8.8 so much that i want to start taking care of it...
There are plenty of heavy duty diff covers, like the SOLID one, but what is better, the diff covers or adding a diff cover guard (which will act more like a slider)?
