Jerry Bransford You're right on at that 2.5 quarts, I think its precise amount is something like 2.41 quarts or so.

trail420 Hey Jerry am I correct in saying I will need roughly 2.5qts of manual tranny fluid for my 03 wrangler 2.4 nv 1500 transmission?

That probably won't cause short term damage but chain driven transfer cases like all Wranglers have require ATF as a lubricant. Gear lube and 10W-30 are both more suitable for gear driven t-cases like the old Dana 300 or Atlas II.

tucsontattoo now I was told by Willys works here in Tucson the gear greese (90wt.) or any thing like it would screw up the cavlar on the syncros. They went on to say thoese transmitions were built for very light oil. Said I should be running Syncromesh by delco..?? I have been running it for a year or so and it doese shift better.. just sayin!

fmfdoc68 I just read an article by Moab Jeepers that most trani fluids contain sulfur now, which corrodes the brass parts inside the ax-5 and ax-15 transmissions. They said that MT-90 by Redline was definitely the way to go.

MT 90 in the tranny yes, the t-case uses ATF+4. I'm not so sure you want motor oil in it!

jdhallissey axles- 75-90 works well

Tranny- it will work on almost anything. I like mt-90 redline.
T-case-- I use 10w-30 synthetic (all I had lol)

05wrangler ik this is an old thread but i was about to do my trany fluid along with the tranfer case and front (dana 30) and rear (dana 35) axles and was wondering what i should use, i have the following

05 wrangler X 6spd manual (im not sure on my tranny and transfer??)
and dana 30 and 35 axles

KBR97 that skid plate is also the crossmember for your transmission. If you remove it you should throw a jackstand under the tranny to hold up some of the weight.
My tranny on the 4.0 also used 3.5 quarts.
Supposedly Redline MT90 or Redline Synchromesh, depending on your tranny is the best you can get. Not cheap though.

just did mine

I just did my 98 4.0, piece of cake !? Mine has a huge skid plate covering the tranny and transfer case. Three bolts on each side and four nuts in the center. I used a floor jack to hold it up while I unbolted it, that part sucked, putting it back on sucked just as much.

I downloaded a shop manual online for about 10 bucks which shows everything you could ever need to know. I think mine, and I don't know if the 4.0 uses the same tranny, used about 3.5 qts of 75w-90. I used mobile 1.

The sizes of the nuts and bolts seem to be 1/2 metric and .5 standard. Gotta luv it.

KBR97 dont forget to remove the FILL plug first, at least loosen it.
Yea sounds wierd but you dont wanna drain all your fluid to find out that the fill plug is seized or stripped. Now your stuck with a empty transmission

4Jeepn Never had a 4cyl, but on the 6, there is a drain and fill plug. Drain is easy fill can be harder. I forget who makes it but there is a hand pump you can buy to make it easier. Not sure on the fluid.

manual transmission fluid change?

i need to change the transmission fluid in my 2003 2.4l wrangler. how hard is it to change? how many qts does it take? and will this fluid work- Royal Purple Manual Transmission Fluid - i have 104,000 miles on it, and the previous owner never changed it once
