Starting problems... Any help?

So... Ive got an 88 wrangler (2.5L 4Cyl manual 5 speed) The darn thing wouldnt start... replaced the fuel pump and filter... bench tested the pump and was shot, the sock was completely black. Still wont start. Starts great with carb cleaner and runs fine after... Ive come to believe that its not a fuel delivery problem otherwise once started it would run rough or just die. has good fuel pressure... been troubleshooting and reading other forums, found that possibly changing out crankshaft position sensor could be the trick. has anyone had the same problems or similar or any advice. thanks for reading
