|stanger04||I may be wrong but a 90 should be an alt not a gen and you may be okay. I haven't had this problem on a jeep but on other cars. If it did mess up anything it not counting fuses then it would be in the alt. Crank it up use meter at battery if it isn't at least 13v then you fried the alt or a fuse not sure. Most autos are equipped for this mess up but then again never done it on a Jeep. Always look at the cheapest and easiest fix then diagnose up from there no matter what auto ( diagnose check not saying replace ).|

Well where do I start. I get a new battery from the auto parts place down the street and he sells me the wrong one. (too wide for battery tray) I bring it back and exchange it for correct one. I go to clean the negative ground to the engine block connection. There is where I find the little stud is finger tight in the block. Then I install the battery backwards + to - and - to +. I know not a good thing. One good spark down by generator lets me know something is a-miss. All hooked up correct now. Multimeter says the Generator?/Alternator? (not sure which) is still putting out 14volts. I haven't drove it around yet. I got my fingers crossed I didn't blow anything. If I did blow something, where should I start my search for blown items???
The loose grounding stud in the block may have been my issue all along and I just messed the rest up all on my own.
Live and learn. Sometimes that's an expensive lesson.

|nohl75||x4 on the battery connections. Also check the ground to the firewall and the one to the motor from the battery|

Just an update. If your working on your Jeep don't forget to turn off the headlights when you quit for the night or you will wake up with a battery that only has 6.4volts left. BUMMER. When I get back to the project, I have to start with a new battery.

When mine did this it was the battery terminals. They were slightly corroded from not being tight enough in the first place. Terminal cleaner brush took care of it.

headlights won't even come on???
Tried to start my 1990 YJ 2.5L to night and nothing. No attempt at the starter solenoid. No clicking from starter. No accessories. Low indication on volt meter. Headlights won't even come on. I wait 15 seconds turn the key and it starts normal.
Battery was on the charger today. I made the mistake and started the Jeep with the charger still hooked up.(maybe an issue) It's a modern electronic charger I use to recharge my boats trolling deep cycle batts. Jeep Battery still showing 12.4 volts. The battery is showing it was made in 2007. Maybe that's the problem However, I thought the headlights would at least be on dim if it was just a low batt. When it did start, it cranked normal so the battery had juice. I drove it 5 miles home and I pull in the driveway and turn the key off with the headlights ON and the headlights go dark. Back to everything not working.
Is there a relay that could be stuck 1/2 between start and run and that's why it's showing no power then later starting normal? Like a starter rely maybe? It's weird because when I say dead (nothing) I mean NOTHING is on or working all accessories dead. The LED's on the radio face are barely readable.
Nothing worse then electrical issues.
Any starting points?? Relays to check??
