I'll second that. There are exceptions of course, but what u said is the norm.

I call my supervisor "the babysitter". I don't think he really does anything except bust us all doing dumb stuff. We never get in trouble though. I mean he'll tell u to knock it off, but that's it really. So basically he does nothing lol he's alright though

Mr. Sinister i've worked in fabrication shops, i've worked in offices, there's similarities and differences. one similarity is you can get people with no sense of humor in both places, and lacking a sense of humors seems to be a requirement for management positions.

GroundHawg It'll go overseas eventually I think. My shop is non-union, but we do order parts from India and China. Manufacturing just is too expensive compared to those countries.

I guess I'll work in a garage again if that happens, fixing cars and stuff. I don't like doing it, but I'm good at it I guess. The airport I repaired tugs, and forklifts, it was fun. Maybe go back
03-03-2011 11:35 AM
GroundHawg My buddy from work sent me a text earlier asking what happened. I told him "new guy threw a pallet and ratted me out saying I did it" lol now that lie is around work and everyone is picking on new guy tomorrow should be fun

You ate half the bosses breakfast and hid it with toast

This is all pretty funny stuff. I'm sure there are ppl reading this all "WTF is wrong with these idiots" lol the only job I had that was goofy like this was delivering pizza as a kid. But every single mechanic and machinist job had nothing but a bunch of dudes picking on each other, and causing a ruckus.

It's funny bc my "crappy kid jobs" (grocery stores, library, fast food) weren't like this, but the "careers" were. The 40-60 year olds are worse than the 16-21 year olds when I worked with them as a teenager lol
03-03-2011 11:33 AM
coolbreeze Its all fun and games till they send your work south or bust the unions. Plenty more jobs where that one came from, right?

GroundHawg We really only have one guy that can't take a joke. He's an African fellow. Now none of us there are real racist, as we all get along great with the other 3 blacks, but we act like we are, saying stereotype stuff about grape koolaid, soultrains, etc. But we get it right back with cracker stuff, can't dance, etc. But he gets pretty mad at that stuff so we avoid it with him.

There's a snitch we pick on to the point he's prob going to quit lol! It's mean stuff like hide crap from him, won't show him how to do new stuff, etc.

The age thing isn't 100% accurate. Other than a 18 and a 25 year old, I'm next at 29. That guy that did the sign on my Jeep is 61 lol and there's this other guy that likes writing messages on your vehicle in the snow. He retired and came back so he's around 68 or so. Most there are 40-55.

You're not a communist boss. You played a joke. My supervisor is cool. He'll mess with you and joke around. He used to run a machine before he became a boss, so he knows how it is. That other guy though, I don't think I've ever seen him smile. Only about 5 guys work under him, but I feel bad for each. He's a whipcracker that complains if you have to quit working 5 minutes to hit the bathroom. He walks the line of harassment as well. If you screw up something he yells and gets upset. Call off a day he gives you the worse thing to do he can think of. Just a general d*ck to ppl.

firechicken The only thing I got busted on was the armidillo cause it got put in the parking lot and I had to get rid of it. It was stinky lol. Other than the we keep it between ourselfs. We don't rat each other out. Plus if somebody calls for employment history what's the boss gonna say. One time he put roadkill in a guys van. That's comedy not incriminating

OsageJeep I wait tables and we play jokes on each other all day. We hide each others phones, keys, tip cups, if we have to go to the store or the bank we will wear each others jackets. Imagine a 195 Lb guy in a 120 Lb girls jacket..or I will take their keys and drive their vehicle to the store (they haven't got to my Jeep yet) one time I took a waitresses phone and seran wrapped it and put it in the old ground up coffee beans...the boss gets it too..she will order an omelet for breakfast and if she is busy I will eat part of it and then cover that part up with the toast..you have to make your job fun to enjoy it..

PTaylor Nothing wrong with a little horse play now and then, but the problem with it is, there is always a limit as to how far to go, and some people just push that limit too far. Also, some people like to dish it out but can't take it.
The older you get, the more serious you get, the less you'll do. The more you'll see how sometimes it not as cool as you think, and sometimes, it comes back to haunt you. Keep one thing in mind though, The longer you stay there, the more that place becomes a part of your future. At some point, your gonna look for another job, and at some point, that other job is gonna call and talk to maybe your supervisor or someone like him. What's he/she gonna say?
A few little pranks can mess you up in the long run....so maybe tone 'em down some, respect that man a little more.

I've been on both sides, the prankster and "the communist supervisor". You can't be both, one or the other.

I remember this one dude we hired, a real dumb@ss, didn't know anything, just BS and kissed @ss. Was the only way he got by. anyway, he liked playing pranks, but couldn't take one played on him.

Anyway, we all have roll around chairs with 5 wheels on them. He decided one day that he would remove one of mine so I would bust my @ss when I sat down. Well, it didn't work. and I went like that all day not knowing.
So I go to push the chair and notice it's missing a wheel. I figured it must have come off and was looking for it when one of the other guys told me he did it. so I went to his chair, removed one of his wheels and installed it on mine.
He comes in and....you guessed it, busted his @ss.

He got pissed off, grabs my chair, pulls all the wheels off, throw them, and then slams my chair down the hall.

he then confronts me, and I get into his @ss.

the boss walks in, but takes his side cause he has no idea what's going on, just see's me in the guys face telling him to back off.

so, yeah, some pranks can go too far, and some people can't handle them. He was one that took it too far and couldn't handle someone else doing it to him.

He's gone now, due to that same crap, good riddance. and when someone calls wanting to know his employee history, it goes to me, and guess what I do!!!

Airborneguy 5 years ago these guys I work with called me out to the parking lot in the middle of the night and when I got out there, they jumped from behind a car and started shooting cap guns at me.

To get them back, I made huge banners out of printer paper and taped them to thier cars. One guy had backed his car in, so his was on the back, the other guy parked nose first, so his was up front. Let's just say the messages where dirty, and very easy for other drivers to read from a distance.

One guy caught it fast because of everyone beeping. The other guy made it home and had a nieghbor tell him later in the afternoon.

Priceless.

Yeah you know how it goes lol!

One time I parked my Jeep real close to this guy's little car. He couldn't get in and he leaves 1/2 hour before me. He's kinda fat too so he had to enter the passenger side and climb over the console.

A week later I pull in my driveway after work. Apparently someone unscrewed my liscense plate, and secured a cardboard sign that said "I'm a gay treehugger" and had a picture drawn of a male body part.

The sign was on my Jeep 2 entire days, for around 100 miles, driving in downtown Pittsburgh rush hour 4 times everyone was honking at me and now I know why.

The next day I greased up all his tools in the toolbox, and hung a picture on his back of a shirtless guy I tore out of a magazine advertising cologne or something lol

GroundHawg I won't do anything. I tend to wait patiently till he needs me...

He drives a stock XJ. now, XJ's do have a tendency to breakdown like most older vehicles, and they have overheating issues. I'll see him broke down some morning and just drive past with my middle finger up I already don't do him any favors, so nothing changes there. Something will happen and I'll get a chance to be an a**hole...it always happens.

firechicken I am a plumber so I totally understand. Ain't nothing like a few practical jokes to make a day great I am famous for a few, dead armadillo in passengers seat, stink bait and chicken liver in a work.truck on a 100+ degree day, stuff like that. If your in a blue.collar environment ya gotta entertain yourself some how. I mean my job is crappy, literally, but it has fun times

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Immature..yeah. Politically correct...no. Funny...you bet, and that's the name of the game I guess in places like this. I can't describe it for the folks here that have white collar jobs.

My girlfriend works in a white collar job. She doesn't get it. "you guys are immature" or "pigs" or "need to grow up" etc. Her work nobody talks to each other really except to spread gossip, no one laughs, and they're drones pounding away on a keyboard.

It's just different
03-03-2011 09:45 AM
GroundHawg I've seen way worse than this and nobody got sent home. I think my timing was just bad. Caught the one a**hole in a bad mood. Nobody really likes the guy. He just likes messing up your day I guess. I'm glad I don't work for him lol
03-03-2011 09:40 AM
GroundHawg That's the general politics of this line of work. You work in an office or someplace similar? If so, the environment is 100% different. Between a garage, 2 machine shops, and an airport maintenance facility..they were all the same. Cut-throat, earn your stripes, get thick skin type of deals. That "you need to grow up" attitude gets you in crosshairs quickly.

Bottom line is it's normally pretty relaxed. I'm trying to think of the word that describes the folks that work there...

Ok, none are dorks. They're all indeed smart, but were all either trouble makers, bullies, arrested, dropped out of school, etc. Know what I mean? So there's this...overabundance of a happy-go-lucky, mildly hostile, attitude I guess. I obviously can't describe it.

Anyway, picking on each other is just a way of life there. Dumb little pranks, or ppl throwing crap around, that's just how it is. Snitches aren't tolerated, thick skin required, carefree attitude is a must. Everyone likes to have fun I guess it boils down too. There's just a miserable boss that has a bit of a power complex that does stuff like this hear and there for whatever reason. I guess you get that everywhere though
03-03-2011 09:37 AM
firechicken You are right and I have never gotten sent home due to practical jokes and fun but I also don't work with a bunch of rats either cause they usually dish it out just as fast as I

I'm all for having fun at work, and i do often. With that being said the part that makes it worth it is the money that shows up in my bank account.
