i'm looking for an ax-5 i can put into my 91 yj. i stripped the teeth off the cluster shaft gear. anybody know where i can get a good used one. i'm broke and my jeeps broke

My Tranny Transplant was successfull. A used AX5 Tranny from a 91'YJ into my 94'YJ. jj33002 was correct, the ONLY thing that needed to be changed was the Bearing Plate and that was simple.
For anyone reading this thread looking for info: It seems that ANY AX5 Tranny can be swapped No Problem..(if you ask a tranny shop..like in my case of a 94'....they said ONLY 94-95's could be used, this turns out Un-true.) There Are however differences INSIDE, So if Rebuilding one would need to use Caution. I could have saved myself a LOT of Questions by just consulting the Q-Tech Catalauge and looking at part #'s for the AX5......why I did not think of that sooner..........?

CHECK THE FLUID. Passenger side of the tranny, the highest plug, it is 15/16th socket, turn that out then stick pinky way in there....you should feel juice. If not use an oil pump to add.
Check Clutch Fluid too, that can cause difficult shifting.
Beyond that I am out of suggestions other than finding a friendly tranny shop to test drive and give you an estimate........that part should be Free, then at least you will know what your up against.

|rollbar||I am PC stupid so bear with me Ive got a 89 wrangler Shortly after I got it (bone stock) It developed a popping in the trans it sounds like gears are trying to mesh together then they pop but it doesnt come out of gear. And it does it in all 5 gears but it doesnt do it every time I drive it Any sugestions|

I finnally scored one on Ebay for $355, not too shaby.
A member in my Jeep club has a shop, he's going to swap it for me for a friendly price.

I am not sure about your mechanical skills, but I know mine are not that great and I just got in there and started taking bolts out. I figured it out pretty easily, and by the third time I had it down to where I could pull it out in less than an hour, by myself. So if you have any mechanical skills you might try to do it yourself to save you a couple hundred in labor!
The one I replaced on mine had the same trouble, wasnt low on oil but 5th gear went out on it. I also checked another one that a shop had and the same thing was wrong with it. It seems like something about those tranny's wasnt made for 5th gear.
I also got lucky and found a used one for $400. It took me about 2 months to find it so keep looking and keep asking and maybe you will find one.

Yup, seen that....but by the time I'd pay shipping and have someone swap this in for me (cuz I can't takle this one myself) it would be close to the cost of having my current one re-built locally! I don't dissagree thats a very good price.........i'm just a poor ....

I just replaced my AX-5 with a remanufactured. $650 + Tax/Ship
They sell on eBay...which is where I got it from. I'll buy from them again!

I can't even afford to replace the tranny......so I hope the clutch holds up. I guess that's not too bad a job though since the slave is external...?
5th Gear makes a horrible noise, like a bag of marbles. It ran low on oil.....(my fault). 1st - 4th are smooth as butter, 5th works......but I don't use it.
A "friendly" tranny shop quoted me about $1,300-$1,400 to fix it....
So the hunt continues for a good used one. I am supprised at how many show up on ebay...and more suprised how many people are buying them. I havn't been able to win one yet.....but with this new info I can search and bid with some more confidence.

|jj33002||That is my understanding of them. As far as I know all of the stuff on the inside should be the same. You should just have to check everything on the outside to make sure it is right. I didnt have this information and ended up pulling my tranny 3 different times. All because of that one little part I showed you. Most everybody also recommends that you put in a new clutch kit, clutch-pressure plate-throw out bearing, while you have the tranny out. I put one in the third time I pulled it, just to cover every angle. They are not that bad expensive either, mine was around $120 at O'reily's, so I would say it would be a good idea. Also look at your flywheel and make sure it looks ok. If not you might look at getting it turned while you have it out. So I think that covers just about all of it, or at least as far as I know. If you dont mind me asking, what went wrong with your old tranny? Was there a certain gear that went out or what? Oh and by the way I have a couple of clutches and pressure plates that are in pretty good condition that I would be willing to part with, for a very reasonable price, if you didnt want to buy new ones. If you are interested in them just let me know and I will show you some pics of them.|

Now THAT'S the kind of straight up, been there done that, tried & true Information I have been Looking For.
With that said, does this mean an AX-5 is an AX-5 is an AX-5...and as long as I'm swapping it I just take what I need off the old one to make it work?

I just replaced my ax-5 on my 95 wrangler and bought one from a guy that had a 91 and the only thing that I had to change was the front cover that holds your throw out bearing. here are some pics.
The one on the left is the one of my 95 and the other is off the 91. Like I said that is all that I had to change on mine to make it work.

Correct, But apparently there are different Shaft lengths, sizes,spline counts....etc...etc.
The most recent good info I got was that only AX-5's from 94-95's can be directly swapped in. BUT...previousely have been told/read/researched every combination of Years from YJ's to TJ's to XJ's.....87-94, 89-00, 94-97.......etc...etc...etc. I suppose by asking here I will only add to the Different answers I get...........but this is what we do.
