Discount Tire P and LT tires have different Ply ratings and load carrying capacities. P = Passenger, LT = Light Truck.

Your stock tires are a P (4 ply rated). LT tires come in C (6ply rated), D(8ply rated), and E(10ply rated). For an everyday tire a P will be more comfortable and most P All terrains or Mud Tires will be able to do the occasional offroading you are talking about. Some people like to run LT C, D and E tires for their added sidewall strength but they are heavier ride stiffer in dailer driving and they usually cost more too.

Nice tires, Fletch

What size are they? Another question here for InfernoGirl/DiscountTire. What is the difference between the P tires and the LT tires?

A friend of mine just put Firestone Destination AT LT265/75/r16 on his H3 , and they REALLY look good. Will there be a big difference between the P and the LT as far as looks and size go?

He will be towing a boat, which I will never do with my Jeep. Other than load rating, ride, and price, is a LT tire worth it for a Jeep which will only go offroad occasionally? Thanks for answering a newbie's questions.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it

I have decided to go with American Racing AR172's. They have 4.5" backspace and 0mm offset. These should work well for the 265 or 285's I put on. I still have to think about that for a while.

The 4" BS will also work for you. Alot of guys run 15x8 wheels with 3.75" of BS on their JK's. The will will just push out a little further.

InfernoGirl With aftermarket wheels you can go bigger without a lift, so the 17x9 will be ok if you put on a wider tire. I don't recall atm, the exact width/height you can do unlifted, but pretty sure 33's are ok with proper bs. I want to say 285 is max... But I might be mistaken..

Sorry long night and not so good morning.... Discount will be along to confirm or deny my reply I'm sure. If you do some reading in the JK forum and wheels/tires forum you'll find what most have had success with. Or look up ESP123.... He's changed wheels and tires like 6 times in the last 6 months... J/k but he has put on several sets since he's had his JK..

Edit: 17's come stock on lots of JK's, and there are more tire sizes and variety available for less $ than 16's. Something else to consider.....

Discount Tire InfernoGirl hit it on the money. 4.5" backspace is ideal for the JK but you can go with a higher BS if you are only running a 285. (as high as 5.25+). In some sizes, like 16", a 4.5" BS can be harder to find. Inferno girl is correct about the 16x10. You'll want to look into a wider tire if you choose to run a 16x10.

Mark, If you are sticking with a 16" wheel I'd recommend choosing a 16x8.5 with a -6mm offset. This seems to be a common 16" size and it will give you a 4.75" backspace. If you don't think you'll go wider than a 285 in the future a 16x8 with a -6mm offset will work too. This would give you a 4.5" backspace.

InfernoGirl The first one you mentioned will be fine. The 10" wheel is too wide for that tire size. You don't really want to put anything narrower than a 12.5" tire on a 10" wheel. The difference in the backspace is that the higher the # the closer into the wheel well it will sit. So the 4" bs will stand out .5" farther than the 4.5" bs. Offset is how far from the centerline of the wheel the mounting surface sits. Backspace is the distance from the inner edge of the wheel. HTH

InfernoGirl. I really do appreciate it. Now I find this as the wheel size available:

1069 Polished 16x8, 5x5 Center: 83.06 Offset: -11mm BKSP: 4”

Now is the -11mm offset and 4" backspace acceptable? What is the difference here? Does the 4" versus 4.5" backspace just mean the wheels are 1/2 inch more into the wheelwell or 1/2 inch more out toward the fender? Now, a 16x10 wheel is available with 4.5" backspace but the offset then changes to -24mm offset.

This doesn't sound acceptable. Seems like I would then need something much bigger than a 285, correct? Something like a 35 or so? And also a lift and different gears?

As you stated before, this is clear as mud!

InfernoGirl Hi Mark That tire size will fit fine on your Jeep with no mods. If you are looking for different wheels anyway, then you can go wider if you like with no additional mods. If I recall correctly with 4.5" bs you can go up to 285's but someone else will come along and verify that. As far as the bolt pattern, 5x5 is the same as 5x127. If your wheels use offset vs. bs then you are looking for something close to -12mm offset to get the 4.5" bs. Your stock bs is around 6". If you don't go wider than your listed 265's you can stay at that bs.

Clear as mud, right? I tried to help anyway....

Hi all, thanks for reading. New here, first Jeep, and first wheel/tire upgrade.

Is it possible for this to be any more confusing? Heck, even a live chat at Quadratec couldn't answer my questions.

Here we go. I'm looking to go for 265 75R16 tires. From what i have read, these seem to be the largest I can go without a lift. True?

Second, I would like to go with Pro Comp Alloys series 1069 16x8 wheels. My question/problem/lack of knowledge is this: What backspace? I can't figure out for the life of me what the right backspace should be. Also, some sites list the bolt pattern as 5x5, others as 5x127. Is this correct? What about offset? All very confusing to a newbie.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
