99jeeper if you havent done it in awhile,nows a good time to change your fluids,trans,transfercase.makes things a little liter if you have to handle them out by hand.

Make sure not to have the flywheel machined or turned while it is out. While that is a normal part of replacing most clutches, that should not be done to the TJ's flywheel. At the most, use emory cloth or a mild grade of sandpaper to remove any glazing that is present on the face of the flywheel.

Help, explanation of how to replace my clutch, ax-15 trans

Hi,

I have a 98 4.0 and I'd like to replace my clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. I am getting a binding feeling in my clutch peddal and I can hear a clicking noise coming from the transmission when I lay under the Jeep and have someone push the clutch peddal down. I think one of the pressure plate springs has gone bad or broke... so my question is, can someone explain the steps needed to replace the clutch? I have done a few clutches on my cars in the past, I have a lift in my garage, and a trans jack, and my plan of attack for the jeep was to:

1. remove the driveshafts and disconnect all linkage to the transfercase and trans shifter linkage

2. support the trans and transfer case at the transfer case tailshaft, so that I can unbolt the skid plate and drop it down

3. once the skid plate is out of the way, this is where my question is. Do I unbolt the trans and pull it away from the motor with the transfer case attached? or is it easier to unbolt the t-case from the trans before unbolting the trans?

If someone could give me a general step by step with any tips I would appreciate it.
