Also had a new radiator installed and changed the belt, but I still can't keep up with the cost of gas the thing guzzles.

What else could I change out to improve my gas milage. If i could get up to 15 or 16 (which I think is highly unlikely) I would be so much happier, but at the rate I drive gas is costing more then anything.

How well do the Jeep's handle the performance chips that re-balance the gas ratio?

I can get 215 miles or so before the low gas light comes on. Apparently it's a 19 gallon tank too.

Thanks

Put your top/windows/doors back on, and drive with an egg under the peddle.

Be lighter on the skinny pedal. Slower starts, coast whenever possible. Other than that, you can swap in a 5 speed, that's about it. I've never seen a programable chip that improves gas mileage, usually it's the exact opposite AND you have to buy premium gas. I had a Stage 2 Jet Chip at one point, it was more powerful, but sucked down the go go juice.

lambertdaman my 97 tj 4.0 gets about 15mpg with 31's stock gears. just got my 4.88's yesterday and going up to 35's, can.t wait to see how she drives.

Dare2BSquare Last tank... 18.5 with doors and top off with bikini top. 50% highway miles. This was my second tank after changing out the throttle body on my 2.5 to a 4.0 body. Took the restrictions out of the air box and put in plugs, wires, cap, rotor and filter.
95 yj w/ 30x9.5 MT's.
The first tank after the swap was 15.6 mpg.

ejmct Just got gas. Took 15.1 gallons and went 282 miles (tank wasn't empty and gas light wasn't on).

What's that, like 18.7 MPG? That's about 75% highway driving, though my highway driving is done at rush hour going to/from work, so traffic is pretty heavy.

cpl_dvldog I just checked my stock JK 2 door X model, with about 2000 miles on it, and all I got was 15.8 mpg

True enough, but when I fill up it only takes 16-16.5 gallons to fill, which leads me to believe that the gauge reads "E" but there's still some gas left in there.

All this is with the top off.

rich1014 I have an 05 TJ - 4.0, 4.56 gearing with 33" ProComps. I recently checked my mileage with a Garmin GPS to be accurate and I'm getting right at 14.0. That's probably about 75% hwy.

debruins in my 1955 i get 6 mpg and about 50mpq (miles per quart)

but thats a really old motor that isnt tuned and it is well old!!!!

you should get better then 12 though, like 15-18 is regular

JeepCrawler98 I got back from a trip to CO and back a few weeks ago - 23/24 hours of interstate/country road driving (excluding the all day wheeling trips) It consistently averaged 20-22mpg based on my GPS's odometer (VERY accurate), pushing the engine as hard as it will go. On other trips if I took it real easy I've been able to push 25mpg.

Around town it'll get about 17 or 18 or so.

2.5L, 33"s, STOCK gearing
08-02-2007 09:03 PM
dbwvu I guess Im lucky, my 97 4.0 gets 18 if I keep my foot out of it and putt around town. I even have a bad 02 sensor and no mods
08-02-2007 08:42 PM
binaryking I get 17.6 with my 02 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 V8. That's with the AC on.

60,000 miles..I am going to change the plugs, etc, but wanted to know how much improvement I should expect after I do this tune-up? Love my Jeep !
Depending on how you drive you may see a gain of 3-4 mpg realistically. For the 4.0 engine, I think 15-16mpg is about average. Keep in mind, you are basically driving a brick. I hope you didn't buy it for the gas mileage!

My '00 Sport gets 10mpg with 33's and a 5 speed, stock gears. But I am a bit heavy on the go go pedal.
08-02-2007 07:54 PM
Walkeraviator I average 17 or so. I-6 Automatic 3-spd w/3.07 gears on 215/75r15. I drive like someone 30 years older than me.... I spent all my lead foot in my civic with a stick and coilovers.
08-02-2007 07:52 PM
2much yeah i get between 12 and 14 with my top off, and I have 33's a six cylinder, and I keep my foot in the gas pretty good. Do you have bigger tires, if so your calculations a skewed.
08-02-2007 06:28 PM
JCS05Rubi Honest? 16.5 top on, 11-12 top off, driving fuel concious. I have seen 9 in my Jeep before. Top off, driving normal etc.

Mines a stock rubi.
08-02-2007 05:39 PM
1BLKJP Don't feel bad. I'm pullin like 9 with my 35's on it. Don't care though. Didn't buy it for the mileage. Bought it to drive over shit.
