Undead-89 If they make a flat clear coat to go over a gloss, semi gloss or satin i would go that route.

POS YJ The paint guy was right. Primers and flat paints are porous and will let moisture seep into the paint. Not too sure how a clearcoat would look over a flat paint, but that would help. Your tub is also galvinized from the factory, which gives it pretty good rust protection already. Sorry I don't really have an answer for you, but a couple things to think about.

InfernoGirl Flat paint isn't as hard as gloss. Don't know about absorbing moisture, but it seems plausible since talc is the flattening agent used..... However, if your first coat is gloss and the final coat is flat then you would be protected, since the final flat coat would have something harder underneath. IE, if you are just painting over the existing finish, not primer over bare metal, then I think it'd be fine.

flat paint is bad?

I want to get my YJ repainted flat green, so i went to a shop (small family owned) to take a look at my options and the guy tried talking me out of getting a flat paint. He said that flat paint will not protect against absorbing moisture and my wrangler will rot from the inside out...
I don't know anything about paint, but since i live in Minnesota, and in the winter we use 3/4 of the worlds supply of salt on our roads, i kinda got worried!

So just thought i would check if anyone here has had their rig painted with a flat paint, and how it's holding up?
