muddinmatt Beauty Spot is a great ride across the mountain for the family and views. Take a camera.

Original_Junior I need to take the family up to Beauty Spot. I heard it is a nice view and hike for young kids.

muddinmatt Correction : I was last at Horse Creek on 10/2013. Sorry about that.

muddinmatt I'm in Johnson City also. I have talked with FS office and it really sounds like they are trying to keep people out of the woods to me.
Stoney Creek has been closed. You can travel up gravel road by Blue Hole but back side is closed off.
Bumpas Cove is closed until further notice.

Little trail I call Dark Hollow (long branch road) in Erwin ... closed due to "storm damage"

There was a write-up in Kingsport Press and JC Press about Bays mountain. Been some offroaders in there cutting trails and doing damage. Report didn't say it was closed but said they would be watching it. From what I understand the Kingsport side has been closed for years and people was going in on church hill side.(Never been there myself)

Buffalo Mtn. (Off Dry Creek) in washington co. has been open from time-to-time and it is now gravel road, all branch-off trail are not legal.

Horse Creek (Greene Co.) was open last time I was there 10/2014. Its a nice ride for a stock Jeep and has a few small challenge spots. With that said : I also noticed some people had been climbing a few places off the trail. If you want to ride it ... better do it soon because I feel that with it being the only open local trail ... It will get more traffic and get shut down also.
Beauty spot (Erwin) is a gravel road all the way across. I have heard they close it when it snows now due to people having to be rescued in stuck vehicles.

I know this is not happy news but hope it answers some questions.

I did see a ton of Jeeps at a steakhouse in Kingsport few weekends ago .. Was that any of you guys?

YJkiddo Any place known for selling decent off road tires? At a good non brand new price? I have 33/12.50 BFG-A/T and would like to trade for 35" mud terrains of some sort.

DiabeticHero- JC resident also here. I've seen your rig around town. Not many of the Commando Greens around here. I've seen yours, another JKU Sport, and then mine.

tennesseegator No problem. A forest service map is always a great thing to have too. You can buy them at the ranger station in Erwin.

Apparently yesterday was the day that the Forest Service, in their infinite and glorious wisdom opened some of the seasonal gates back up. There are several that they are deeming too storm-damaged (or whatever) to open to the public.

I don't know what their name for the Bumpus Cove trail is, so I don't know if it is open or not. For the past several months the only places to go have been out by Holston Mtn or past Blue Hole. Yawn.

Longhorn, I can't help you with Bays Mtn. I still haven't been up there, and the guys in the Tri-Cities Jeep Club haven't been going up there at all, I think a pretty good part of the trail is illegal.

Double_a914 Bumpus cove is the closest legal wheeling that I know of. I wish there were more spots.

tennesseegator Ok, I thought beauty spot was the first turn off and the second one was named something else. Either way. I went to the ranger station in Unicoi to pick up a map and they said that the rangers were out closing gates...not sure how many they could find to close since most of them are closed all the time anyway!

So do I look for a road called Bumpus cove? I guess ill do some google earthing in that area.

JTTJ19 Bumpus cove is a road off of the river road you can find it with a GPS. It would be a lot easier then me trying to explain it the redneck way lol

Now hopefully someone can share directions to Bumpus.
You don't turn right at the fork, that's just the first view you keep going for another 5 or 6 miles

You can go up past Blue Hole, there is a few side roads that I haven't checked out due to usually being by myself and having pretty crappy tires. There's the road that goes up to the Pinnacle fire tower, but there is absolutely nothing up there off of the gravel. There are what looks like ATV trails near the gravel road at some points, but from what I've seen they are too narrow for trucks. There's also the road that goes up to the Beauty Spot outside of Erwin...I don't think there's anything up there either besides the views.

There are a couple of places that people talk about: Bumpus Cove (which from what I've gathered is not the best place to take a stock Jeep), Stoney Creek, and Bays Mtn. I haven't been to any of these places. The Jeep club here seems to go to Bays a lot, probably just out of convenience. The pictures I've seen make it look kind of gnarly, and I've heard that 1) the trail is really short and 2) something about the Bays Mtn people really not liking the 4x4 traffic.

To be honest, I've been trying to even figure out where these places are, and I've seen many other people ask for specific directions, but never get them. Not sure why people are so tight-lipped about it.
Bumpus is a great place for stock jeeps, and the beauty spot is where I go when it snows also there is a good place in lime stone cove called Dixie creek that's a lot of fun, it's right at the indian creek camp grounds. There is a lot of trails around here you just have to know where to look.

crowe Lol sounds that way. She had claimed the white one as soon as I pulled off trailer but we agreed she can have my daily tj long as I paint it pink first for her lol.

And by that time a jk should be had for reasonable as I am curious to get one for a daily just due to comfort and I do like the looks but I'd never part with my tj's. I just can't justify 30k for a new jeep when I have my daughter to take care of.
