Peepers If my TJ is like your YJ (most likely from the looks of it), the skid plate holds the tank, and the straps hole the tank to the plate. You will need a new (or used) factory skid plate, because if you read most of the aftermarket skid plates they say installed over the factory plate. this is because they don't have the straps to hold the tank in place.

I believe I paid around $170 for a new factory skid plate, and its a lot better quality than the one that was on there.

whiteyj One heck of a case of rot! Trying to figure out just what exactly is still holding the tank up? The tank skid should be an easy find for you.

Crso8541 I believe the straps are to keep the fuel tank and skid plate together as one thing. The Tank is held up by a series of bolts. As for replacing, there is tons of after-market options. As long as the gas tank is fine, I would look on ebay and find an old stock one.

Fuel tank skid plate question....

Hey all, new to the forums, new to Wranglers...but not new to the auto hobby.

My brother gifted me his 95 Wrangler I4 and so far love it. After fixing a bunch of little issues, it's running great and this is little thing is a blast as a runabout. It's about as unstoppable as they come.

Unfortunately though, my brother having lived/worked in the city all the years since he bought the jeep new in 95, the Jeep has a fair amount of rust.

SO, now the gas tank skid plate has rusted through...

What gets me is, are their fuel tank straps that hold it from below? Or does the skid plate hold the tank in place? What parts do I need to fix this thing? Anyone have a picture of what it should look like?

thanks for the input
