Yea going to install this weekend - I took delivery of the Warn XD9000i yesterday and swapped my old winch out and installed it on a tractor to do some skidding - clearing land for a hunting cabin. I feel better, warranted or not, knowing that although the new winch is actually less powerful than the old, that the new winch will run forever (or should anyway). It looks great also, I like the integrated, sealed design and the controls including the clutch are obviously of very high quality, you can feel the difference, so I am happy.
The ViAIR is the Constant Duty Onboard Air System - it comes complete with a long-running 450C, 100% Duty Cycle compressor at its heart that will fill the supplied 2.5 gallon tank from 110-150 PSI in approximately one minute. Operating pressure is 110 PSI, tank pressure is 150PSI.
Now I just have to figure out where to mount the tank and compressor - time to use the SEARCH function eh? lol I know I'm not the first to install one of these. I'll follow up with pics and how it went -

IMO the problem is a combination of all three. The Warn's pressure switch will only allow storage at 100psi. It has a 1/2 gallon on-board storage capacity. I would be lying if I tried to give you any figures on the demands of a standard 1/2 in impact wrench but I would think it would be much greater than 5cfm.
I bought a 3 gallon storage tank, that gave me a little more run time but still by the time the nut would start to get tight, the 3 1/2 gallon storage was already depleted. At 5 cfm it would take about 90 seconds to repressurize the system.
I tried using this setup to install my RR stubby bumper (8 x 1/2" bolts) and before I finished one side the cooler and tubing on the powerplant were smoking and I was still able to get another 1/4 turn on the nuts with a ratchet.
As for the system you suggest, storage at 150 psi will give you more power to the impact and should equal better performance however at 2.5cfm the compressor will work longer/harder to repressurize the system. Higher storage capacity will give you longer runtime between cycles but again you will have more downtime between.
I know that Warn’s website says that you can use impacts with the Powerplant but as an owner I think that statement is ridiculous. I do however feel that with enough storage capacity, a nail gun shouldn’t be a problem for either the Powerplant or the ViAir

So let me ask -
I'm really not looking to run an air ratchet BUT it wouldn't be bad to be able to do - do you think the problem is the tank pressure (the warn has what 90psi), or the volume (2gallons) or possibly the output 5cfm.
The ViAIR I am installing is a continuous ouput unit @ 2.45cfm, has an operating pressure of 150psi and a tank of 2.5gallons.
Frankly, if it inflates tires quickly, and can blow up balloons and pool toys this summer, I will be happy, but using a pneumatic nail gun would be a pleasure (which I think this setup will be more than capable of doing, and an air ratchet, or impact tool? that would be nice -
So what do you think? what is the restriction to keeping a 1/2" impact tool from running properly? I'm thinking neither output is enough to keep up with one thats all, but I could be wrong -

I think your decision to go with a less expensive Warn winch and an under-the- hood compressor is the better choice.
As I said, as far as I know the dual force compressor can't be used for lockers because the only way to even turn it on is to stand in front of the unit, move the selector switch from winch to compressor, plug in the remote and turn the compressor switch to the on position.
As far as air tools, i bought a 2 gallon tank and connected it in series and the compressor couldn't run a 1/2" impact worth a crap. Once the air was depleated, i still got a half turn with a ratchet A pneumatic nailer... Perhaps, but the cost savings and the ease of install would make it a no brainer.

OK screw it - I wanted the WARN to work, but it's not going to happen
Here is what I am going with ;
Viair Ultra Duty Onboard Air System
Warn XD9000i Self-Recovery Winch
Getting the winch for $899.00 with free shipping (Quadratecs price was $937 with $60 dollars shipping) and the air system is a constant duty, with a 2.5 gallon bottle and a rated pressure of 200PSI and all the hoses, chucks and material needed to install for $404.00 (Qaudratecs price was $469.00 plus a surcharge of $19.95)
So I save $175.00 which while not a lot, is something - the difference in winches is only 500#, they both have the (what I consider awesome) 125' wire rope, the 9000i will fit in my existing winch mount without modification or removing the bumper, and the constant cycle air system @ 200PSI with a 2.5 gallon tank, will provide a hell of a lot more power when I need it (since I am basically building a house on land without water, sewer, or electricity in upstate Maine.
If anyone has any input on the Warn or ViAir, feel free to voice it - I'm waiting to order, as a friend gets my business first, but if he cannot match the price I found these prices at Electric Recovery Winches-RH2

I'm beginning to think I may just replace the existing winch with a mid range warn, and plumb the vivair system under the hood and be done with it - my only concern is the Vivair is only 2.5cfm versus the warm @ 5cfm and whether a bottle will negate that issue -
I could do the powerplant for the same money, but I would have to cut the hoop and weld it back in either laying forward somewhat or add 2" blocks to it - I'm going toward the forward leaning hoop as that will allow the clearance I need while keeping my hoop mounted lights down low.
For the record, what winch did you go with with Warn?

I am not exactly in your situation, I am not concerned about tools at all. I will be putting air lockers in at some point. My plan is for 35s; so I put an ARB heavy duty compressor under the hood. Airs my up just fine. If I go bigger tires may consider a bottle. Also have a Warn winch on front bumper.
I wonder if a reason the power plant won't do air lockers is because it does not hook up to the solenoid for the lockers?
I think the ViVair under the hood will work well.
Seems to me that the cost for the powerplant is better spent on other mods

I bought my tuff stuff winch when I first got my rig - it was and is like most of the offshore winches; inexpensive, powerful and for me a great fit since I only use it here and there (6-10 times a year, and only once for myself thankfully). I have the opportunity to sell my winch and upgrade. Since I enjoy capability, WARN would be my logical next step.
I read your comments. I have elockers so not worried about the dual force being able to operate them, though that does sound strange - it can't? and Impact tools with 5cfm I understand not working, but you can put an air can on @ 90psi - wouldn't that be enough? I only need it for an pnuematic nail gun and airing up tires.
I wonder - I have the Mopar front bumper - it might be as simple as relieving the sides, cutting the hoop, and with spacers at the bottom of the hoop, add 2" in height to accomodate the powerplant. Currently the height is 12" and the plant is 13.75" - correct me if I am wrong.
But here is the thing - I could always mount a ViVair under the hood which may make more sense. The 5cfm flow of the WARN is nice, but will the 2.5cfm flow be half as nice? get what I mean? If I have the air tank mounted, even at 2.5cfm, would it take much longer to air up?
Thats my issue right now - cut, weld, and touch up paint the existing mopar bumper and install the WARN at 5cfm, or mount a smaller WARN unit and simply install the ViVair at 2.5cfm with an air reservoir.
Anyone? anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I have the exact winch you are talking about and I love it. It does sit high in the bumper and I had to cut and weld my RR hoop to make it fit so the height may be a concern.
I bought it because I trust Warn, it's all i've ever used. But with that said a winch is a simple thing and if yours is doing the job, do you really want to change it? The air compressor on the dual forge can't be used for air lockers and forget about impact tools. It's only good for tire inflation, you can only switch it on with the remote.
Quite honestly, I bought it because it looks sexy so if sexy is what your going for, then go for it. The powerplant will pull you out of any hole and look good the whole time.

OK the heck with Quadratech ... found it online for $1338.00 with free shipping (UPS Ground) - considering it is normally $1599.00 with 60-100 dollars for shipping, I can't see how it could go wrong. The website should you care to look is gowarn.com
The unit is 24.1wide x 13.75" tall and 6.8" deep - just have to determine if it will fit under the front bumpers hoop; looks like a bumper removal scenario.
Anyway back to the story, if you have this winch, how do you like it?

Warn Winches PowerPlant Dual Force
Oh lucky me - a buddy has offered to buy my existing chinese winch (12,500k) from me, when I mentioned I may upgrade. So all BS aside, I was looking at a Superwinch, and also a small air compressor.
I ran into this monster "WARN PowerPlant Dual Force HP 9500LB Winch" Warn 71800 - WARN PowerPlant Dual Force HP 9500LB Winch - Quadratec ... quadratech is offering it on an instant rebate for 1450.00
Does anyone have any experience with this unit? and WHY is a Warn so damn expensive anyway? I enjoy my chinese winch (Tuff Stuff is the manufacturer and YES the stickers came off it before it got put on the Jeep. I have self recovered with it a few times without issue, and all told last year pulled a dozen or so people out (in the snow we suffered through) and it is still going strong.
So thoughts on that winch? I'm thinking with the 600 dollar price tag of an underhood air compressor anyway, it may just fit the bill in this case
