Merle Swaggard I looked at my motor mounts but obviously not close enough I had some noise and vibrations see pics

jp'rs_peep'rs I'd think (JMO)that you can simply unbolt the four bolts holding the trans/transfer mount and jack up the drive line to see visual as well as with your hand if the mount is bad.

JeffsJeep 1st gear is going to give you more torque, more flex, so keep that in mind. How did you test or inspect your mounts? did you use an engine hoist and try to lift the motor off the mounts? I know I probably couldn't tell my motor mounts were failing just by looking at them since they will be holding the weight of the engine on them. Also, the transmission/transfer case is bolted to the stock skid plate - did you drop that and inspect the mount?

Also, if you start off in 4wd you are spreading the torque across both axles, thus limiting the amount of torque applied to one axle.

You might find an open parking lot and get a friend to stand next to your Jeep and see if they can help pinpoint the source of the noise when you accelerate. One thing I'd recommend is going through every place you can think of first (glove box, center console, trunk, under the hood, etc.) and remove anything not bolted in/down. Hate to spend all that time looking only to find a lost wrench sliding around, or something silly like that.

Right, there isn't play in the "U" joints, but you can move the drive line ever so slightly (less than half cm) either way..

Nothing else is loose.. I'm stumped..

Also, I found that if I start off in 2nd Gear, it doesn't clunk..

Sb5551 There should be no play in any u-joints in the drive line. If you get underneath the jeep and try to move the tranny it should not move at all. The only sure fire way to check the trans mount would be to drop the skid plate, but it might give you easier access to check other things like linkgage and stuff.

Timberman Alright guys!

I checked the motor mounts and transmission mounts and all appear to be ok.. There aren't any cracks nor does anything seem loose.. I checked the Tie Rod and drag link assembly and everything seems tight(Bolts anyway).. You can rotate the whole assembly about a half inch either way when you twist it though..

Anyone?

How much play should be in the drivelines?

Timberman Sorry guys.. I have been out.. Yeah, i don't think it would be the U-joints as most of them were recently replaced.. The front and rear shafts have just a tiny about of movement when you twist, but just about every drive shaft I have looked-at does the same..

Ok, I checked the Gear shift movement when I rev the engine.. it does move, but barely. Like not even a centimeter.. Is the slightest amount of movement normal (I'm telling you guys, its barely noticeable).

Also, i was driving it in 4 hi and the problem goes away..

I'm puzzled...

tlrrob1000 Motor and tranny mounts, u-joints, slip yoke as well as the transfer case chain will all cause a clunk. Good luck

jgano23 i would also check the drive shaft u joints, they are known to clunk and go bad from time to time.

Sb5551 Check the whole front end to see if anything is loose. Another thing to check would be the trans mount that attaches to the skid plate.

BIG TJ Hey guys...having the same symptoms as timberman. I will check to see about the gearshift lever as well. Definitely feel something clunk. I have a 98 Sport 4.0 5 spd. 4" lift w/ 33's Would love to figure out what the heck that clunk is.

JeepnJim Sounds like possibly a broken motor mount. Does your gearshift lever move to the side when you rev the engine?

Discovered at new "Clunk" Need Advice..

Hey Guys (and Gals),

I discovered a new "clunk" and would really appreciate any advice I can get.

Upon returning from an extensive wheeling weekend; I noticed that my normally "smooth as silk" driving Jeep has adopted a small clunk when I shift up through gears (basically 1st through 3rd). Also, if I am driving in lower gears and take my foot off the gas and then press on it again rapidly, the clunk will come back. I have a feeling this is "Torque" based as it doesn't reappear if I am down shifting to a stop. Only on upshifting and when I take my foot off the gas and then hit it again rapidly. Also, if I am hyper-sensitive when shifting, it will not replicate.. Only if I am getting on it a little..

Here are my specs:

2000 Sport w/ a 5 Speed NV3550.

I initially thought it may be the control arms (recently replaced with RE adjustable uppers front and rear and fixed lowers front and rear), but I just got underneath and inspected and nothing appears loose. I actually put a wrench to each bolt and nothing was loose.

I did notice that my whole steering assembly does have some play. It will rotate a quarter turn both directions (Front to rear) if you grab it and twist.. Nothing is damaged there and all the bolts are tight..

I would really appreciate any advice I can get here!!
