Like the thought process here... also that you have two Jeeps these damn things are addicting

tacojeep Ive owned many tacos and two rubi's... the 2012 JKR is by far light years ahead of my 08 TRD off road DCSB 4X4... LIGHT YEARS!

Arkos Nice revival of an OLD thread, ... so I'll add my 2cents, ..

People are always talking about modifying their sports and sahara's to match a Rubicon, but it would cost more to modify a sport to match than it would to buy a Rubi.

Everyone's talking about E-disco's and lockers, but the the Low gear in the Rubi has gotten me through more stuff without even having to use the lockers. Swapping tranny's is a much more expensive proposition, ...

I've owned a 96 XJ Classic for a few years now, and I can honestly tell you that I drive my JK with the confidence that it would take some real doing to get her stuck.

Besides, ... who's got a bigger R&D budget, .. ME sitting at home on surfing the internet, or JEEP?

JKRuby12 Wow, looks like there are some really thought out responses here, but will just say this:

If you have to ask the question, you're probably better off with the Sport or Sahara - not the Rubi.

P.S. I pick up my Rubi within the next 48 hrs...

Duffyc04 I'll put it this way, if you get a rubicon you won't regret it....Seems like there's a possibility of that happening with another consideration...

rics1997 Actually, many are saying that Rubicons hold their value better. That isn't true. The Rubicon actually is at the bottom of the three in residual value. The Sport actually holds it value better and then the Sahara and then the Rubicon. That comes from Chryslers lease information. Now mods don't hold value real well so many use this to say that Rubicons hold their value better because they need less mods. Again, not really true. Most mods many do to one they do to any model like new tire and wheels, lifts, premium bumpers and other mods.

If you don't need a Rubicons crawling advantages then don't get it. they are all based on a Sport with just a package upgrade. Again, it's the extras that don't hold value. The Wrangler does great in value over the years by itself.

Texas10Sahara I wanted a Rubicon when I bought my Sahara in 2010 but I let a few people talk me out of it. After I got the Sahara, I kept looking at how much I needed to spend to get it up to par on what I wanted, wheels, tires, lockers, etc and I kept kicking myself. When the 2012s came out with the better engine and transmission, I knew I wanted a Rubicon this time. I love it. I have a friend with a Sport that is doing what I did, deciding what to add first to get it up to par. Just my 2 cents

Texas10Sahara I just traded my 2010 Sahara in on a 2012 Rubicon, I had it 2 years and 2 months, it had 45500 miles on it. I got 23500.00 trade in for it, cleared 5800.00 to pay down on the Rubicon, payments are less then they were on the Sahara.

dc_2112 Like others here, I'm trying to decide between the Sahara and the Rubicon. I'm worried about being a poser too. I drive a suburban north Texas commute 3-4 days a week and spend 99% of my time on highways. However, we do have land in east Tx that barely has a passable road and I do a lot of camping around the state. We're new empty-nesters and I *hope* to start doing more fun stuff. I currently drive an '02 Xterra (2WD) that I adore but it's time to get something new and pass this one on to my daughter. I told my husband this was my version of a Harley... my mid-life-crisis toy, but I'll actually drive it every day unlike some expensive bike. If I get to go off-road once a year it will probably be the happiest days that year, right? I could get a nice little Benz but hey, it's not like I'm driving the Autobahn every day either. (Yes, I'm rationalizing out loud.)

No longer will I fear the potholes of the local shopping mall! Steep highway ramps shall not daunt me! I WILL have the Rubicon of my dreams! Or a Sahara. Still deciding.

I have a 2010 Sahara with 44000 on it, just traded it in on 2012 Rubicon and got 5500.00 over what I owed, nice down payment.

rotate Well said all around, thanks for the advice everyone. I mean, the Rubicon makes more financial sense, therefore it's clearly the most logical decision I can make

I have a hard time knowing my husband WILL be taking mine out ASAP. I am even afraid of losing the new car smell in mine soon enough LOL. I just want to keep it new for as long as possible... at least 2 months

But this is what it was built for, and as long as he washes it before he gets home I am fine with it... only because it is hard for the kids to get in and out and not get dirty when there is mud all over it.

We bought it because it suits our needs, looks schmexy and we actually left the choice up to the KIDS because they are the ones who are stuffed in the back seat. One of them in the middle in a huge car seat (see my AVI, we were topless). We gave up our 7 pass. van for it and never regretted one moment of our decision.I have wanted a jeep since I learned how to drive (I am 46..) and when I was single I dreamed about owning one but could never afford it. Then 3 kids later I thought all was lost and I would have to wait another 20 years when they were grown and gone. When they came out with the JKU I KNEW that it was meant to be.

Hubby wanted it (Rubi vs Saraha for eg) for the off-road capabilities, I wanted it because of the interior comforts. We both wanted it for the value and the fun. WIN/WIN

Dude, its YOUR Jeep. Who cares what a bunch of Jeep nerds on the internet think about you buying it?

Say it out loud and see if it makes sense: Its a solid, capable off-road vehicle, right off the dealer lot. It holds its resale value exceptionally well. I like the way it looks, and I can afford to buy it. But I'm hesitating because there are people on the web that I will never meet, that might judge me for driving it on pavement.

If anything, your most vocal critics (if there really will be--I have yet to experience it) will be the jealous Jeepers that want a Rubi but can't get one for whatever reason.

Dieselbud Def a shortage of them in Canada.. I almost wish we had not traded our 2009 in and sold it instead. I looked and looked and found ONE 2009 JK4D Rubi in BC for sale for $30K (everything but the GPS, exactly like ours). The Sticker price was $39K on the lot for ours.

I knew a couple who were actually searching for a used one last fall and there were none in the dealer's database or anywhere else they looked.

We ended up getting almost $26 for it. 25K miles on it... we easily could have sold it privately for more, but I wanted the 2011 NOW.

The greatest thing was we went from 5.9% to 2.99% financing, wow what a difference THAT made in payments.

scooterqualified if it's in your budget, get the Rubicon, this way you'll stop wondering if you should have gotten one or not. That is what I did. Now I am always looking for more and more excuses to use its features and capabilities. The old saying of "have it and not need it" almost goes away because you'll be having it and looking to use it. I agree with many of the posts above. Happy 2011 JKU Rubicon owner here. BTW i live in New York City, there is almost no way for me to justify having it but believe me, I do use it to at least a degree of its potential.

Anyway I greatly appreciate the advice. I guess I could go for the Rubi, but I feel guilty enough/ like a poser getting a sport or sahara with little intention of taking it offroad. bhc04 If you can afford the Rubicon, get it. Even if you don't need the capabilities and extras, it's always there just in case and better resale value in the long run.

That is quite a list of mods! Just some food for thought- I'm pretty sure you can make the rubi just as nice as the Sahara. You can add leather, heated seats, power everything, nav, etc. The only thing (that I'm aware of) you can't get is the painted fenders and the 18 inch rims (but you are replacing those anyway). One thing to consider is the rubi will have the dana 44, lockers, e-disco, 4.10 gears driving off the lot...all under warranty.

You can build up a Sahara and make it more capable than a rubi, but it is going to end up costing you far more just to get it equivalent to the rubi.

I think you would be better off to "nice up" the rubi

John412 When I bought my JK (sport) the first thing the guy that did the paper work said was "the first thing you did right was buy a Wrangler for there resale value" I did my whole deal online and paid just over 21000. Not that I plan on selling it but for what people pay for used Rubi's and Sahara's that (sport) could probably sell for about what I payed at this point. I havent seen any 11's for under 23000 around here on the internet and i'm sure with the 2012 it will just make that 2010 with the (less fancy interior) look better to a real Jeeper.

A 2008 JKU Rubi, low mileage STOCK, sells for 32/35K, mine has an offer of 34K and I can keep most my mods-(Detonator Yellow)

The low mileage-STOCK condition, 4dr (JKU) Rubi will MAKE money the first two years here in ca.

Dieselbud Hey, if I can help convince you to do it in any way just let me know! If the 2011 compared to a 2009 is any indication of what the 2012 is like, I say GO FOR IT!

We just traded in our 2009 Rubi for the 2011. We had 25K miles on the '09 in a little under 2 years, so me and my family have done a LOT of travelling. ( have 3 daughters: 12, 9 and 3.5). My hubby is the Off-Roader in the family and uses it whenever I allow it, to go hunting and touring around. I don't really want to hear about what he does with it when I am not in it LOL. But it is my primary vehicle and I love everything about it. Even more than the '09 which I never thought would be possible.

16 hours after we brought it home last month, we took the whole family on a trip to Vegas/Disney. In 16 days we put 4500 miles on it, and we never heard one complaint from the 3 peanuts in the back gallery. They love it as much as we do.

PS: hubby has a bumper picked out that he wants as well as a winch. I want rims and bigger tires first.

AND we also got a lot more for a trade in than we owed on it, that has never happened to anyone I know who trades in a vehicle that they still owed the bank for LOL.

John412 The Rubi outfitted with those bumpers and throw a winch on there too. I'm just saying it don't sound like the price of a Rubicon is scaring you away by that list of mods. I think your decision is made.

Grog Rubi's retain their sticker value so much better than the other models.

LaTuFu Based on your new information...get the Rubi and don't look back.

You'll already have better axles, electronic discos, front and rear locking diffs, and 4.10 gearing.

A 4" suspension lift and 35" tires make a great combo DD/capable off-roader, especially with the Rubi at the heart of it.

Do the lift, tires and wheels, and the bumpers, and you might decide that's all you really need to do.
