I wouldn't think so, but it wouldn't hurt... although it might be a smart idea to replace the cables with new ones while your in there, as they more than likely have some corrosion in them. Being 9 years old and all.

I was looking into some of the sites about using other alts and they said something about doing this.|

Fox - your 98 2.5L has a stock ouput of 90amps, same as the 4.0L from that year.
The 90amp was used from '91 to '98 on the 2.5L and 4.0L Jeeps(TJ, XJ). The ZJ, for some reason is a completely different mounting system. I found that out the hard way when we had to replace it on my sisters ZJ.
So anyway, you need the 136Amp alternator off a 98-99 Dodge Ram with a 3.9L V6, 5.2L or 5.9L V8. Reason being is that it is also externally regulated so your system will work with it. It has all the same mounting bolts and its positioned the same. The only difference is that it has a 7-rib pulley, and the stock is a 6-rib. No problem as you can just push your belt all the way to the back of the pulley without any issues, or swap the pulleys.

ok guys, I decided that a new/rebuilt alt is in order, I would perfer to just upgrade to something like 130w or 150w. I would like to know what other vehicles are compatible with my 2.5L, having the winch and soon to be running 8 lights including my driving lights. I need something that is gonna put out. help?

I tried the 98 durango alternator on my 2002 4.0l tj sport and it did not fit. Clocking of mounts, sliding bushing VS my sliding nut, 7 rib pully (minor issue). I bout it for 40 dlls, and gave it to my inlaw in Tijuana wich owns a 98 durango, it will serve him in he future.
I continued my search and found, with the same bone yard, a 99 grand cherokee 4.0l aternator. it fits perfectly, same mounting tab clocking and everything. The Grand and my 2002 TJ chare the same belt copnfiguration and even a 6 rib pully. The othe r difference was that the Tj comes with a 117 amp "denso" unit and the Grabd with a "BOSH" unit. I again paid 40 dlls. Additionally, my alternator is located on the left side of the engine, but on top. not like my old cj7 and myinlaws 86 yj, that are mounted on the bottom (left side again, "as you face your engine).
You might say 117 amps should have suficed, but 19 amps more with a mere 40 dlls. Ill buy that for a dollar. Also I have a battery isolator and a red and a blue top optima HOME MADE set up mimmicking an after market set up, they wanted 160 dlls for it, I spent 20 dlls on steel, and approx 8 hour making.

I've heard a stock jeep cherokee ~140 amp alternator is a bolt on.. the only difference is the + cable holder.. instead of it being to the side going back it sticks out straight. let me see if i can find u linky.

so from what I've heard on the thread is that a good switch for the alt is the dodge durango one. is this true? if so is it a direct bolt-on? I've been hearing that when I put my winch on and need to use it the alt isn't going to charge fast enough on my rig so upgrading is a good idea. what size output do I have on mine right now? (2.5L) and how much more amps is the durango one give me?
