|YJ Jeep Freak||Do you have a bend in the area where the spare tire bracket is located? This was the problem on an 89 Sahara that I was trying to fix. Someone had backed into something and bent the tailgate right in the middle just enough it would stay closed until you were driving and hit a bump. But it looked fine with sparetire on. I tried to bend it back but the metal was too weak that it kept popping open after shutting tailgate a few times. I temporarly fixed by taking 2- 1.5"x15" steel brackets(about 1/4" thick) and drilling all the way threw the tailgate and brackets and running bolts threw and tightening with nuts. Its worked so far, but I found a used tailgate that is straight that I am going to replace the quick fix. Good Luck|

If you still have your spare hanging on it, take it off and see if it gets better.....especially if it is larger than the original. If this solves your problem, consider spare relocation.
If the spare is NOT hanging on it, you may have damage to the area where the hinges are bolted. If this is the case, you may need to reinforce that area.

The Trunk on my YJ often opens while driving. I currently have it closed with a ratchet strap but would like it to be fixed right. When the trunk is open it hangs very badly and even pulls down on the passenger-side back panel. In order to close it i have to heave up and push it closed at the same time. Any suggestions?
