Jerry Bransford X2, I wouldn't run shock boots either. Boots just tend to trap fine grit & sand that can help the shock seals to fail prematurely.

doclouie Wow quite an old thread. Anyway usually the zip ties are for the boots, but do yourself a favor and throw the boots away.

p95loser Right now until the end of May skyjacker is giving a 35 dollar mail in rebate on 4 shocks... I was able to get all 4 after the rebate for like $105 shipped.

Easy enough that you don't even need to jack the Jeep up or even remove the wheels. You can actually replace all four shocks with all four tires sitting on the ground without a jack or jackstand in sight.

What you do want to start doing now is to start spraying the top two bolts on top of each of the two rear shocks with Liquid Wrench, PB-Blaster, or Break-Free (not WD-40). Those two particular bolts like to get corroded into place and snap off if you're not careful so start spraying them now so when it comes time to actually unscrew them that the odds are good that they will come out instead of breaking off. Spray them every few days so the Liquid Wrench etc. will have time to work into the threads and break the bond that may be present if they are corroded.

Finally, the top nut on the front shocks can be frustratingly tight. I normally get the top nut off without too much difficulty after using a set of visegrips to hold the shaft underneath to prevent it from turning as I unscrew the top nut. Some give up and cut the shaft off above the shock so it can be pulled out from the top, others remove the bolts from the bottom first and grab the shock and pull it out, working it back & forth until it snaps off. For me, having a set of visegrips clampled TIGHTLY onto the front shock's top shaft to prevent it from turning as I remove the top nut works fine.

It's easy I think I never done it on a jeep before or a suspension job before and I did it on my 1996 eclipse with no problem all I needed was a write up/ factory service manual to guide me and I was set! The car had the shocks and struts together and on the jeep it's easier since they are not together. Just pretty much take off the bolts switch it out and torque to specs.

Logirl How difficult is it to change out the shocks? I'm bouncing all over the road from crappy little bumps and potholes. I've got a 98 tj 4.0 with about 125,000 miles on it and I'm thinking about trying to replace them myself

Rubicon06Va I had Skyjacker 7000 hydros and threw in trash. Bought Bilstein 5100 gas shock and there is a huge differance in performance.

Megadethx I just installed the Hydro 7000's and am very happy with the ride. I am not a fan of the gas shocks.

Wdkirk01 Shocks smooth out the bumps. Your coil springs actually to the pushing and pulling. With no shocks, your coils (or springs) would bounce you all over the place. Shocks keep that from happening.

3ft Thats how the Hydro's work....Nitrogen I think will push back, but hyrdos won't, the spring will do that....I have heard that the nitros ride a tad stiffer, thats why I went with the Hydro's, from what I hear they are suppose to be close to a factory ride...mine are stiffer, but then the old stuff had a 125K on them and were worn out.

Hydro 7000

This maybe a dumb question but I'm still a nubie. What is the deal with these hydros. I bought the skyjacker kit n I thought shoks were fully extended and sponge back when compresses. All of them can be pushed in then pulled out same with the steering stabilizer. What am I missing???
