italianjbond my jeep has almost 180,000 miles and it is still running as strong as this one i saw that has 280,000 miles which has the original engine
they are great vehicles and they will run forever

CheapJeep My first vehicle was a YJ and please think about the ensuing statements before you decide to go buy a jeep.. 1) They are the most fun vehicles on earth 2) They're like a dog, they require a lot of attention 3) Your going to lose some fillings in your teeth as they ALL ride like a lumber truck 4) Gas is 4.00 a gallon where i live; your jeep will probably get between 10-15 mpg at best

But a jeep is definitely the best vehicle to learn on.. it's not to hard to replace anything on them and you can upgrade it relatively easily. It will also probably never let you down. I wish I still had my jeep..

And im 18 by the way so this is from the view point of somebody your age

dinks95 BTW, the YJ has about 140K miles on it, starts every time I turn the key, and goes through a foot of snow like nothing's there. No special upgrades to anything, except we are in the process of putting on side rails so it's easier for grandma to get in. It's a process because some of the body mount bushings kind of crumbled away when we took them off so we ordered new ones and are now finding replacement bolts for the originals that are pretty nasty. Couldn't be more pleased with the YJ.

dinks95 I gave my 14-yo grandson his first driving lesson last week in my 5-speed '95 YJ. We both laughed so hard we about peed our pants. Had a blast. He would love for this to be his first car. Both grandma and grandpa know how to fix it and will gladly teach him the finer points of keeping this baby running. If you have to spend money on a vehicle, it might as well be one you have fun driving.

italianjbond i have had my yj since i was 15
its a great first vehicle because you dont have to really worry about it
the 258 (4.2) is a great motor and will never let you down and you can get it cheap enough you can rebuild it and put a 4.0 head on it and get better gas mileage and horsepower and tourqe than the 4.0 puts out

Tony 76 I'm also with computeruser get a YJ. I don't care what year. Just look it over make sure it's body frame and drivetrain are all sound and go for it. I have a YJ with a missfire problem and I still love my jeep and it's my daily driver and a yj or a wrangler i should say Is so good that even with two melted plugs on my 2.5 I made it 30 minutes on the highway to my house on Thursday if that's not dependable I don't know what is!

jk'n Well, I just got my son a 92 YJ this past December and he can't drive it until this December when he turns 16-1/2. It has 100K on it. The frame has been painted and shows no signs of any rot on it. It does have some body repairs done on the under side and from the looks of it, someone took a lot of time doing it because it looks solid. I just bought a touch-up paint sprayer and an air brush. My intention is to get paint on any surface that is rusting after prepping it so that the paint will adhere. My son will be involved with this over the summer. I Have primed him for this telling him that the intention will be to do a camouflage paint job leaving as much of the factory paint showing as possible. It will be fun to see what he comes up with for design.

Currently the transmission is out because of a clutch problem. The guy I bought it from included a clutch kit in the sale. It is leaking fluid from either the transmission or transfer case. I have to clean that up before the tranny goes back in.

I gave a blow by blow here because it is important to know, no matter what you get in the end, you will need to observe what is happening with it and take appropriate action to make it right. If, for instance, the transmission is leaking and you don't check the fluid level often, you may find yourself changing the transmission for a new one. That can be expensive if you hire it out to be done.

Any used vehicle with 80 to 100K miles on it will be a maintenance hog. With your purchase price limitation, this appears to be the market you are in. Regarding the purchase of a jeep, you have to realize the type of vehicle that it is. It is road worthy with special considerations. It is not a sports car. they can be fun and safe if driven for what it is.

Stargzr75 I agree with computeruser. Keep up with the maintenance schedule and a Jeep can last forever. I've got a 91 YJ 4 cyl., and I've used it as a dd since 04. It's got 180k, and I just recently had to swap the tranny, but that was probably my fault, for never changing the fluid. All in all a good vehicle, loads of fun. Easy to work on, and like Jrussblues and KJ 92YJ said there are inexpensive parts everywhere for Jeeps. Only downside to my Wrangler is the gas mileage is poor and the 4 banger lacks power. If I could do it again, and had a choice, I' have gone with a straight 6 4.0. IMO. Good luck! Whatever you get hope it's a Jeep.

Welcome to life. A 100k mile car is a 100k mile car, period. Now if you've had it from 0k miles, well, then at least you know the maintenance history and know where you stand. But things still break at inopportune moments.

That having been said, if you learn to keep up on preventative maintenance and to get on problems before they get big, you can cut your likelihood of major problems surprising you down the line.

I've daily driven a YJ for six years and then TJ for nearly seven years, and I think they are perfectly suitable first car vehicle choices. So if you want a Jeep, get one and enjoy it. But do yourself a huge favor: get it in tip-top shape before you start pimping it out. It sounds like you need this thing to work for you as a daily driver, so focus on reliability and maintenance upgrades before tackling suspension lifts, big tires, and the like.

Well if your gonna think 4runner then might as well look at XJ's and ZJ's.. They are better offroad then the yota and very good on the road.. They can be found for 3-6k in good-great condition in that price range..

AnthonyZ28 I've been looking around lately and have started to consider a older Toyota 4Runner. My limitations are less than 6000$, decent milege and decent gas milege. For the most part it will be a daily drive with the occasional weekend off roading.

From all the guys with peugot heads as the amc cut off bled into the late 80's. They also got a lot of kinks worked out with the fuel injection set up by 94. Plus I owned a 94 and had quite a few buddies who had pre 94's..most spent a ton of cash fixing the problems I just stated or swapping carbs etc. Or go with the pre 94...not my jeep and I wont be working on it.

mtu1293 99 heads were okay, 2k is when they had problems. Well at least in the XJs, so I am assuming that held true for other jeeps of that era.

kj 92yj seecond jrussblues, but even the engines, tranny's and t-cases are relatively inexpensive. someone always out there wanting to sell cause they're doing a swap etc.. aftermarket parts abound for these vehicles.....

jrussblues Have a transmission reputable transmission shop check the drive line. In yj buy a 94 or 95. Some earliers have head problems. When you get ur jeep drive straight to the auto parts store and get a repair manual. The great thing about jeeps is that most parts aside from your engine, transmission and transfer case are are relatively inexpensive to replace. And check for rust

banks316 In my town there is a shop that charges 60$ and they will do a full inspection of any car you bring in. I'd say check around to your local shops see if the do a used car inspection. It could save you from getting a lemon.

mtu1293 Other ideas, for jeeps, or vehilces in general. Also what are your plans for a vehicle? DD / trails / purchase price / mod price / mpg, etc?

Heck in college I had a 78 GMC with 7" lift and 38s so any close to stock jeep would be better then that. BUT gas prices where much cheaper in those days - lol...

pakman55 I partly agree with above. My 97 TJ was technically my first vehicle, but its not what I learned to drive in. I drove my mom's toyota while i learned how to drive, then got my jeep. I love the jeep, but the gas is killer. I'm about $40 a week to school and around.

AnthonyZ28 Ok so if a YJ isn't a good first vehicle, what would be a good first one? I read your suggestion to a to a pre 2000 cherokee and will consider that but any other ideas?

Irongrave IMO YJ's/TJs do not make good first vehicles (a 4x4 is only a car if you race it) They are not kind to inexperienced drivers. I'm going to second what mtu1293 stated and I would hunt for a pre 2000 Cherokee. I put 200k on my XJ before I sold it and its still running. and my family WJ is just having issues now with lifter tick at 189k and a few years of abuse at the hands of my sister. Properly maintained the 4.0 motors will run 200-300k.

mtu1293 lol - well I had all this info typed out for ya, then my computer at work decided to reboot itself

Sooo, let's try this again..

For starters I've owned two high mileage jeeps - 92XJ w/234k miles on it, and my current 95 YJ w/173k. Both ran, though the XJ 4.0 was getting tired when I got rid of it. My YJ 4.0 still has great oil pressure, starts right up, and shows no sign of problems ( yet - lol, but probably now cursed myself).

Of course any seller will tell you all the great things they have done, but somehow forget to inform of any of the bad stuff. A test drive will tell you alot in regards to the drivetrain, and check the body over for rust repairs, and the rear of the frame area.

Now I'll for surely get flamed for this next statement..... You asked about other jeeps, and say if you had $4k to spend you will probably get a newer, lower mileage XJ vs a YJ. Probably a little better mpg, more room, and a better ride. Not saying to go this route, but having gone through the college thing many years ago, a reliabel ride is always nice to have. If you go with a YJ, I would look for a 4.0 FI one, 5spd may net a little better mpg -- personally I would stay away from a 4cyl, but that is more a preference on the individual.

NAVYCHIEF not a car..........it is a yj, jeep or wrangler.i own a 94 with 99,000 on it. it is my dd. works agood and lasts a long time.

First car help!

I've been looking in the market here for a few months now for a first car. Well through my searches I really like the YJ Jeep Wranglers. But the only thing is that most of them have over 100k miles that are in my price range. It will mostly be used for driving to school every day and maybe a occasional off roading on the weekends. I've talked this over for my mom and says that it is defiantly a good possibillity and would be a good opportunity for me to get to know how to repair things on the vehicle. The only thing im worried about is the possibility of something fatal going out on the car that would be a very costly repair.
I've also read people saying that anything serious that could break would most likely brake in the milage rage of 70k-100k.

Any thought or helpful ideas? I would like a jeep only cause of the off road capabilities and such. If there are any other vehicles that are good off road and are in the same price range feel free to suggest. (I would prefer not a truck cause in my redneck town all you see are lifted trucks with cut out mufflers - no offense)
