fire239 Honestly, all of the stuff you have listed is very easy to fix. If the engine is not dead, which I don't know, and you like the Jeep, keep it and fix it. In my experience, ANY Jeep you get is going to need work done at some point. Might as well start with this one. I really dont think your are gonna find a clean 4.0 that doesn't need any work for anywhere near 5,500. At least around my area. Clean 4.0s go for 7500-8000 all day long.

SilverTJMike You can run 35's with tube fenders and an OME lift, give the guys at rokmen.com a call. They are big on low center of gravity.

Engine being beat, I'd want more information than that. Hey if you can bring it back go for it. That price range, hell most price ranges will have lots of work. If you are not an expert an checking a vehicle out bring it to a mechanic first and have them give it a once over, most dealers will do a 100 point or something inspection for 100 bucks or so.

If you are handy, you'll be able to pretty much fix anything that comes at you on a jeep. I reserve gearing for the pro's though.

yeah thats def a great idea, but my thought is i might want to go bigger someday like upgrade to a 6 inch long arm kit with 35s and i know for a fact a 4 cyl cant handle that, the mechanic said that my engine was beat because of the 33s and 4 inch lift on it now, so its still hard to tell what i should do..

SilverTJMike Pick yourself up a factory service manual first, it will make maintenance a whole lot easier! Moparonlineparts.com good place to pick up parts. Fsm will make changing the timing cover gasket or seal easy, I'd replace them both while you have it off, check the chain while you are in there. I'll have a timing chain replacement write up soon on stu-offroad.com for the 4.0, I am told the 4cylinder is the similar.

So make a list, no matter what jeep you get it's going to have lots of little maintenance to get it to where you want it.

Owen_TJ its not as bad as you think, man...its easy to work on.

You got it for a decent deal so i wouldnt be too upset.

Another simple fact is that...its a jeep, you're gonna hit a couple snags here n there haha.

Get a junkyard gearbox, Do not get a dropped pitman arm, you shouldn't need it

ahah for sure would be a good way to go, but it is expensive, expecially for a 16 year old like me ahaha.

Owen_TJ its no problem, man haha...you'll never understand without askin!

And you'd need to regear both front and rear axles...its kinda pricey which is why i suggested taking the 4" lift off and running a 3" zone with 32's because in my opinion the stock 4.10s will run 32's easy...

You can get a regear done for about a grand or fifteen hundred. The process is simple. You just choose the gearing option you wanna go with (bought off a parts website) and then replace the gears in your current axles.

Its a manual, and im fairly new to jeeps and how would you regear the jeep, bring it to a mechanic and have them do it for you, like what exactly do to your jeep? And its a manual

I know everyone will think im an idiot but i never really understood ahah.

Owen_TJ The "rapping" is hard to diagnose...i'd definitely do a plug/wire/cap/rotor/oil/air filter change and then get a bolt in the manifold and see where you're at with the engine.

As for the lift...you can definitely keep it on there but for sure get an SYE and the other vital parts of going with a 4"+ lift. Then you'll be wise to regear to 4.56's or 4.88's.

Is it manual or auto?

i am in Massacussetts, so there is a lemon law so i could get my money back, havent asked them for some money back yet, they offered that but i dont know how much exactly.

Thank you for the advice but if i wanted to keep the lift and tires in could i buy a slip yoke eliminator and a couple extra things because im going to be doing a lot of wheeling this summer. or do you think i would have to take the lift and tires off?

srad600 Buyers remorse if a bitch. You didnt mention where you got it from. If you CAN for sure get some money back then youd be silly not to. I dont think your in all that deep tho, like mentioned above it sounds like a lot but its all doable stuff man.

Owen_TJ You're pretty much stuck where you're at...just tackle one thing at a time, you'll be fine.

The 4 cyl is a fine motor with most anything besides constant highway runs.

If i were in your position, i'd get rid of the 4" lift because i'd bet money the previous owner just went a cheap route without doing all necessary things to run a 4" lift such as an SYE and a few other critical things. Then i'd run a 3" zone lift or even a 2" budget boost. Get rid of the 33" tires because in my opinion, too much for the stock 4.10 gears (assuming its manual).

Scoob I think you are stuck with it. Unless your state has some sort of lemon law for used vehicles.

I guess i am old fashioned and set in my ways. But the first time a state told me I had to do anything like that to MY vehicle. I would have been looking for employment in another state.

I need help!!!

I just bought a 1998 jeep wrangler sport (4 cyl, stupid me should have bought a 6 cyl) with a 4 inch skyjacker lift with 33 inch super swampers by Trxus. I paid 5500 for it and it has 146k miles on it. I got it inspected and they said a lot of things were wrong with it... I go "ohhh shit." They said power steering box leaking from input shaft and pitman shaft would have to be replaced with a drop pitman arm and power steering box, front timing cover is leaking, engine rapping, missing exaust manifold bolt causing exaust leak, front track bar bolts loose cause damage to Bolt Holes, all tires are chopped. Does anyone have advice on if i should get my money back, or some money back and try to fix it? Or does anyone know tips to solving any of my problems, thanks everyone
