Jerry Bransford Your transmission requires either ATF+3 or (better) ATF+4. Nothing else but that. It's the wrong stuff if it doesn't say ATF+3 or ATF+4 on the front label.

Jerry Bransford Have you checked if it has enough ATF in it? The transmission ATF level has to be checked in a certain way... engine and transmission fully warmed up, engine running, shift through the gears then shift into Neutral (set the parking brake!), then check its level with the rear-most dipstick on the passenger side of the engine. Don't check the level with it shifted into Park.

My 1998 TJ Automatic Trans is stalling

This has happened twice now. The first time I tried to put it in 4wd and it stalled.

Now today, just backing out of my driveway, I shifted to drive and the engine died...I turned the key and it turned right back on, and I drove it all around going 50+ just to see what would happen, it worked fine.

I got it about a month ago and it's been sitting and maybe has 40 total miles on it in that time, I haven't touched the fluids or anything since I bought it.

What could be the issue and is this a major concern
